QFIT STOOL HOME KIT OVERVIEW
The QFIT (Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test) stool test is widely regarded as a reliable, convenient, and cost-effective way to catch potential inflammatory disease or cancer of the bowel. Catching this at an early stage increases the chance of it being treatable.
The test is a non-invasive screening tool used to detect tiny traces of blood in a stool sample that are invisible to the naked eye. It works by using antibodies to identify human haemoglobin - a protein found in red blood cells - which can be present in the stool when there is bleeding anywhere in the lower digestive tract.
Because bowel cancer and pre-cancerous polyps can bleed intermittently, the test is commonly used as a first-line screening method to identify people who may need further investigation, such as a colonoscopy.
TAKING THE TEST - HOW IT WORKS
To take the test, you simply collect a small sample of your stool (poo) using the provided kit and post this back to our laboratory for analysis.
A positive result does not automatically mean cancer is present, as other conditions like haemorrhoids or inflammatory bowel disease can also cause blood in the stool - but it does indicate that further examination is warranted.

HOW TO POST THE SAMPLE BACK TO THE LABORATORY
You need to send the collected sample back to our laboratory, the same day, before 12:00, in a pre-paid envelope. Take it to the post office as increasingly the post boxes are not emptied every day.
Your sample will come back to us via Royal Mail Tracked 24 (please take it to the Post Office before 12:00).
If you drop it off at a post box - it will (most likely) not get to us the next day. So please take it to the post office in the morning, right after you finished taking the sample.
If the sample is delayed and your blood is unsuitable for testing - we will send you one more kit, free of charge, so you can order with confidence.
WHEN WILL YOUR SAMPLE BE PROCESSED
We aim to start testing all of your sample the same day we receive it in the lab.

Think of it like a "mystery shopper" programme for laboratories - at regular intervals, EQAS sends us samples with known values that are undisclosed to our team. We analyse them exactly as we would any other sample and return the results to EQAS for verification. It keeps us consistently accurate, with no room for error.
