About the Testosterone Blood Test

The Testosterone Blood Test offers a comprehensive analysis of the overall testosterone levels present in your bloodstream. This essential hormone is intrinsically linked to key aspects of overall health, playing a central role in driving libido, ensuring fertility, influencing mood, and bolstering the maintenance of muscle strength and bone density.

For many men, a dip in testosterone can be the hidden culprit behind a range of symptoms. It is not uncommon for diminished testosterone levels to lead to a reduced sex drive, feelings of constant fatigue, mood disturbances, erectile difficulties, or a noticeable decrease in muscle mass. Couples facing challenges in conceiving might find the results of this test particularly enlightening.

For women, an anomaly in testosterone levels, especially when elevated, can be indicative of conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Taking this test can offer clarity and direction for appropriate medical interventions.

Doctor's notes

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Testosterone is produced in the testes in men and is traditionally considered to be the "male" sex hormone. Whilst it is produced in much higher quantities in men, women also produce testosterone in the ovaries and normal testosterone levels are important for both men and women.

Testosterone is necessary to maintain mood, muscle mass, energy levels, libido and sexual function. It is also important for fertility in men. Lacking testosterone can lead to vague but pervasive symptoms, such as low mood and fatigue.

More marked symptoms can include loss of muscle mass, loss of body hair, erectile dysfunction, changes in sleep, and the development of breast tissue in men.

Although testosterone levels do decline gradually with age, sharp declines in testosterone levels can occur due to a number of medical conditions and you may be at higher risk of this happening if you have had previous illness or injuries that have affected the testes.

Red flag symptoms for the Testosterone Blood Test

If your blood tests come back normal but you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is essential to consult a doctor. These could be indicative of a more serious underlying condition:

  • Increasing muscle weakness.
  • Unaccounted for weight loss.
  • Worsening symptoms of any nature.

Your Results and Health Dashboard

The results of your Testosterone Blood Test will be emailed to you as a secured PDF file, ready for your GP and will also be uploaded to our Health Dashboard area of the website. It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

It's free and is available with all of our tests.

Special instructions

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Testosterone Blood Test.

The testosterone test should be taken in the morning, between 7am and 10am.

If you take biotin supplements, stop taking them 72 hours before the test.

If you are using gel testosterone replacement therapy, do not take the finger prick test from the hand you use to apply the gel.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Testosterone Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

Why does the test have to be taken in the morning?

Like most hormones, levels of testosterone fluctuate throughout the day in a cyclical pattern. Levels are highest in the morning, so this is when we recommend that you take the test. Taking it later in the day may give the false impression of low levels.

Can I take this test if I am using Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Yes, it is a good way to monitor your response to treatment and help to establish the right dose of replacement for you.

Is the testosterone test useful for women?

It is useful to measure testosterone levels in women who have symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in whom testosterone levels may be raised.

There is also increasing interest in the role that testosterone replacement should play in HRT for post-menopausal women as low levels of testosterone in women can contribute to reduced sex drive and vaginal dryness.

Why take this test?

Hi, I am Dr. Marco Esposito and here is why it's important to take this test.
  • You want to find out if low testosterone levels are contributing to symptoms of low mood, low libido or loss of muscle mass.
  • To monitor your response to testosterone replacement therapy.
  • To see if your testosterone levels are in the normal range.

Is this test right for you?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.

For men, the testosterone blood test may help explain symptoms such as low libido, low energy levels, low mood, erectile dysfunction, or loss of muscle mass. You may also want to take the test if you and your partner are struggling to conceive.

In women, high testosterone levels may be associated with the condition of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
