About the test

This comprehensive health check is designed for those who are considering testosterone replacement therapy or who are on testosterone replacement and need to have their treatment monitored.

Many men are interested to know if the symptoms they are suffering from are due to low testosterone levels and whether these symptoms could be improved with testosterone replacement.

This test will check your testosterone levels, but will also check for other conditions such as kidney disease, anaemia, or thyroid dysfunction that can cause similar symptoms.

Whilst some men may benefit from testosterone replacement, like all medical treatments it is not without risks. Because of this we recommend a health check before you start and then regularly once you are on treatment.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Although there is no clear evidence that testosterone replacement therapy causes prostate cancer, high testosterone levels can make any pre-existing (and possibly undetected) cancer worse.

For this reason we recommend a physical examination of your prostate as well as the PSA test that is included in this blood test.

PSA is a useful screening test for prostate cancer but it is not perfect so you should be aware of its shortcomings. Many men will have a high PSA but not have prostate cancer.

Testing the PSA in these men can result in them having invasive procedures, such as a prostate biopsy, when there is actually no problem. Similarly, some men will have a ‘false negative’ result – a normal PSA when there actually is underlying cancer.

For this reason, even if your PSA is normal, you should still see a doctor if you have symptoms such as difficulty passing urine, getting up lots at night to pee, or feel that you are not emptying your bladder properly.

Testosterone replacement can also alter your cholesterol levels, cause an abnormally high blood count, affect your liver, and affect the levels of other hormones.

The Ultimate Testosterone Replacement Test therefore checks for all of these things.

Even if your blood tests are normal, you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms below because they may be a sign of serious underlying illness.

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Drenching night sweats
  • Persistent fevers
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Getting up more than usual at night to pass urine
  • A feeling that your bladder is not emptying properly
  • Progressive and severe back pain

Your Results and Health Dashboard

It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

It's free and is available with all of our tests.

Home test kit for Ultimate TRT Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

When should I take this test?

You could consider this test if you want a general health check and are worried your symptoms are due to low testosterone, or if you are already considering taking testosterone replacement.

If you are already taking testosterone, you should consider taking this test 6 months after starting, and then 6-12 monthly after that.

Why do I need to avoid heavy exercise and sexual activity before the test?

Heavy exercise, particularly cycling, can artificially raise you PSA. The same is true for sexual activity.

Does a high PSA mean I have prostate cancer?

No, there is a high ‘false positive’ rate for PSA. Only about a quarter of men with a raised PSA will have prostate cancer.

A high reading should prompt you to have a physical check of your prostate, if you have not done so already, and your doctor may want to repeat the test.
