This hormone is crucial for development during childhood and adolescence and plays important roles in maintaining tissues and organs throughout life.

The human growth hormone (hGH) blood test measures the level of growth hormone in your blood. Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and is essential for growth, cell repair, and metabolism. This test helps diagnose various conditions related to abnormal hGH production, such as gigantism, acromegaly, and growth hormone deficiency.

High levels of growth hormone can indicate conditions like acromegaly or gigantism. Acromegaly occurs in adults and is characterised by the overgrowth of bones and tissues, particularly in the hands, feet, and face. Gigantism, on the other hand, occurs in children and leads to excessive growth and height due to an overproduction of GH. These conditions are typically caused by benign tumors on the pituitary gland known as adenomas.

Low levels of growth hormone can result in growth hormone deficiency, which can be present from birth (congenital) or develop later (acquired). In children, hGH deficiency leads to slowed growth and shorter stature than expected for their age and sex. In adults, it can cause changes in body composition, including increased body fat and decreased muscle mass, as well as reduced bone density, leading to a higher risk of fractures.

    Yes, usually the same or next day.

    Our clinical team consists of practicing NHS and private GPs, who work closely with our laboratory and can tell you what your blood test results mean for you. Having an integrated laboratory and GP services makes your health journey seamless and extremely efficient.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

There are some special instructions to prepare you for your Growth Hormone Blood Test.

This is a fasting test, so do not eat or drink anything other than water for 12 hours prior to your test. This usually is much easier if you have the test booked in first thing in the morning. You can then break the fast after the blood draw is completed.

Take any medication as you would normally. If you are taking any supplementation - please tell the laboratory.

Do not take biotin supplements for 72 hours before the test and please talk to the prescribing GP before stopping.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Human Growth Hormone (hGH) Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.
