What is the Male Hormone Blood Test?

Hormones work together in complex ways to regulate biological functions. The Male Hormone Test analyses levels of key hormones to assess masculinity, energy, and fertility.

Specifically, the Male Hormone Blood Test looks at hormone levels that are involved in fertility, sex drive and sexual function, maintenance of muscle mass, and maintenance of mood and energy levels.

We calculate Free Androgen Index to measure active testosterone levels. Low FAI may explain low testosterone symptoms despite normal total T. Additionally, we examine LH, FSH, DHEA and oestrogen to give a comprehensive male hormone profile.

With one simple home test, gain a deeper understanding of your hormonal health and how it impacts energy, sexual function, fertility and overall well-being

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Hormones do not operate in isolation but form part of complex cascades and feedback loops that help control all aspects of our biological function. Whilst testosterone is the male hormone that is most often focussed upon, there are more hormones involved in the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics, regulation of sex drive and sexual function, and male fertility.

The Male Hormone Blood Test looks at a number of different hormones to give an in-depth picture of your hormone profile.

By testing for Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, we can calculate the Free Androgen Index (FAI) which tells us how much biologically active testosterone you have, rather than simply total testosterone. If your FAI is low, it may explain why you have symptoms of a low testosterone level despite an apparently normal total testosterone level.

The hormones LH and FSH are produced in the brain and are important for testosterone production and sperm maturation respectively and are therefore crucial for sexual function and fertility.

The hormone DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands and is an important precursor to testosterone. We also check oestrogen levels because, although oestrogen is typically considered the "female hormone", men also produce it in small amounts. High levels of oestrogen can impact sperm production and sex drive.

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Male Hormones Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

Why is the Free Androgen Index important?

The Free Androgen Index tells us how much of the testosterone in your body is "free", or biologically active. It is the active testosterone that produces the effects of testosterone. In some cases, an apparently normal total testosterone level may mask low levels of active testosterone. This means you may be suffering the effects of low testosterone despite your levels appearing normal.

Can women take this test?

Whilst all of these hormones are produced by women, and are important for women, this test is primarily aimed at men. You may be interested in the Female Hormone Blood Test.

Can I take this test if I am using testosterone replacement therapy?

Yes, you can use this test to monitor your response to treatment.
