DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS
Hormones do not operate in isolation but form part of complex cascades and feedback loops that help control all aspects of our biological function. Whilst testosterone is the male hormone that is most often focussed upon, there are more hormones involved in the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics, regulation of sex drive and sexual function, and male fertility.
The Male Hormone Blood Test looks at a number of different hormones to give an in-depth picture of your hormone profile.
By testing for Sex Hormone Binding Globulin, we can calculate the Free Androgen Index (FAI) which tells us how much biologically active testosterone you have, rather than simply total testosterone. If your FAI is low, it may explain why you have symptoms of a low testosterone level despite an apparently normal total testosterone level.
The hormones LH and FSH are produced in the brain and are important for testosterone production and sperm maturation respectively and are therefore crucial for sexual function and fertility.
The hormone DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands and is an important precursor to testosterone. We also check oestrogen levels because, although oestrogen is typically considered the "female hormone", men also produce it in small amounts. High levels of oestrogen can impact sperm production and sex drive.
