HOW TO USE THE 1ML SYRINGE
These instructions are written for a 1 mL BD Emerald syringe, which has a 0.1 mL scale and is sterile, single use.
BEFORE YOU START
- Organise your equipment in a well-lit, clean area and wash and dry your hands.
- Check the syringe packaging is intact and within expiry. Do not use if the packaging is damaged.
- Confirm your prescribed dose is in ml. The syringe graduations show volume in ml.
HOW TO CONNECT A NEEDLE TO A LUER SLIP SYRINGE
‘Luer slip’ means, when a needle connects to a syringe by friction. There is no clicklock fit. Instructions on use:
- Keep the needle cap on.
- Align the needle (female) connector hub with the syringe (male) tip.
- Push the needle hub firmly onto the syringe tip.
- Twist slightly to fit it securely.
If the needle feels loose, remove it safely and use a new needle and syringe.
HOW TO DRAW UP AND MEASURE ACCURATELY ON A 1mL SYRINGE
The BD 1ml syringe has 0.1ml graduations or lines. Each small graduation/line equals 0.1ml.
- Attach the green ‘drawing up’ needle as mentioned above.
- Draw up the medicine slowly by gently pulling back the plunger.
- Hold the syringe at eye level to read the volume accurately.
- Measure using the top edge of the green rubber stopper closest to the needle. A practical rule is to line up the top of the black ring with the required dose mark.
HOW TO REMOVE AIR BUBBLES
- Turn the syringe so the needle points upwards.
- Tap the syringe so air bubbles rise to the top.
- Gently press the plunger to expel the air.
- Re-check the volume at eye level and adjust to the correct mark making sure there is no air in the needle or syringe.
CHANGING THE NEEDLE
Change the green ‘drawing up’ needle after you have removed air and confirmed the dose on the syringe.
- Remove the first green needle carefully and dispose of it straight into the sharps bin.
- Attach the new blue ‘injecting’ needle using the same luer slip method, push firmly and twist slightly. This needle can be used for both IM and SC injecting.
- If injecting SC, you only need to insert between 1-1.5cm in depth and not the whole needle.
- Press the plunger gently until air is expelled.
SAFE DISPOSAL OF NEEDLES AND SYRINGES
- Do not recap needles.
- Dispose of used sharps immediately into a proper sharps container at the point of use.
- Do not dismantle the syringe and needle before disposal unless you have been specifically trained and instructed to do so.
- Do not put used needles or syringes into household waste or recycling.
- Do not fill the sharps bin above the marked fill line. Keep it upright, closed when not in use, and out of reach of children and pets.
