A vitamin B6 blood test measures the level of pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP), the active form of vitamin B6, in your bloodstream.

Certain people may be at higher risk of vitamin B6 deficiency, including pregnant women, the elderly, people with kidney disease, and those on certain medications (e.g., some antiepileptic drugs).

Testing can help ensure that adequate levels are maintained.

Monitoring is also useful for people with chronic conditions, such as chronic renal failure, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease, can affect vitamin B6 levels. Monitoring can be part of the management of these conditions.
