DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, the Rubella IgG test is a key part of pre-pregnancy and antenatal care.

It helps us confirm whether you’re immune to rubella, which is particularly important because catching the virus during early pregnancy can cause serious harm to the developing baby, including miscarriage or congenital rubella syndrome.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Rubella IgG (Immunity) Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Rubella IgG (Immunity) Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Rubella IgG (Immunity) Blood Test.

What does a Rubella IgG test check for?

It checks for IgG antibodies against the rubella virus, which indicate past infection or successful vaccination. A positive result means you're immune and protected.

Do I need this test if I’ve had the MMR vaccine?

If you’ve had two documented doses of the MMR vaccine, you’re likely immune. However, if you’re unsure of your vaccination history or are planning a pregnancy, this is a good way to confirm immunity.

Is this test safe during pregnancy?

Yes, the Rubella IgG test is completely safe during pregnancy. It’s routinely included in antenatal screening to ensure you’re immune and not at risk of rubella during the pregnancy.

What happens if I’m not immune?

If you’re not immune and you’re not pregnant, your GP will usually recommend getting the MMR vaccine.

If you're already pregnant, vaccination is not given until after birth, but extra precautions will be taken to avoid exposure during pregnancy.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE RUBELLA IGG (IMMUNITY) BLOOD TEST?

The Rubella IgG test is important because it confirms whether you have immunity to the rubella virus, either through past infection or vaccination.

While rubella is usually a mild illness, it can have serious consequences during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, potentially leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), which can cause deafness, heart defects, or developmental delays in the baby.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE RUBELLA IGG (IMMUNITY) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Rubella IgG test is right for you if you are:

Pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as rubella infection during early pregnancy can lead to serious birth defects. Confirming immunity helps protect both you and your baby.

Uncertain of your vaccination or infection history, especially if you don’t have records or were born in a country with low vaccination coverage.

A healthcare, childcare, or education worker, where rubella exposure risk is higher and immunity is often a job requirement.

Undergoing pre-travel health checks to areas where rubella is still prevalent.
