PLAC (LP-PLA2) BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

The PLAC (Lp-PLA2) test measures a marker of inflammation in the walls of your arteries. Since this type of inflammation is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes, the test can be used to help assess your overall cardiovascular risk.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

The PLAC (LP-PLA2) blood test is a useful tool to help refine cardiovascular risk. Because it looks for active arterial inflammation it helps to identify those who are most at risk of life threatening events so that they can be intensively managed to reduce that risk.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the PLAC (LP-PLA2) Blood Test.

What is PLAC (LP-PLA2)?

PLAC (LP-PLA2) is an enzyme that is produced by immune cells as part of an inflammatory response. It plays a specific role in the inflammation associated with atherosclerosis (the build up of cholesterol rich plaques on arterial walls) and is therefore a marker of inflammation within the artery. This inflammation is a key part of the process by which these arteries become blocked in heart attacks and strokes.

What do raised levels of PLAC (LP-PLA2) mean?

Raised levels suggest increased risk of a cardiovascular event and the need to reduce this risk through lifestyle measures like smoking cessation and maintaining a healthy weight, as well as through using medications such as statins.

What does PLAC (LP-PLA2) tell me beyond normal cholesterol testing?

PLAC (LP-PLA2) measurements help to refine your individual cardiovascular risk. In some people, such as those with a strong family history of cardiovascular disease, conventional risk assessments may underestimate cardiovascular risk. PLAC (LP-PLA2) testing means this extra risk can be identified and managed more effectively
