This non-invasive pain-free swab carried out at home allows you to discover how your DNA influences your response to many prescribed and over-the-counter medications.

A simple swab of your DNA is sufficient to analyse specific genes in your DNA responsible for drug metabolism, providing assistance in choosing, or changing to, more appropriate medications at dosages suited to you, and which to avoid.  

More specifically, this PGx tests looks at  >180 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and other genetic variants in genes that affect how your body:

  • Breaks down medications (metabolism)
  • Transports drugs around the body
  • Responds to drugs at their target
  • Is at risk for side effects

These genetic differences can help predict whether a medication is likely to:

  • Work as expected
  • Be broken down too quickly or too slowly
  • Require a higher or lower dose

    We are extremely fast, with some results available within hours and others within a working day or less, from the time your sample is in our lab. However, this is not a guarantee and should not be taken as such. This is the guideline turnaround time that can be shorter or longer.

    We are extremely proud of our very short turnaround times and a very efficient laboratory processes, you will start receiving results as soon as they are available and have completed clinical validation.


    Whilst we accommodate the shortest of time scales, with some results available within hours, for this particular test the usual turnaround time is: 10-15 Days.

    Yes, our doctors put a huge amount of effort into your online Health Dashboard, which will have explanations of what each biomarker is, the normal reference ranges and what it means if you are outside of them.

  1. CAN I SEE A GP TO DISCUSS MY RESULTS?

    Yes, usually the same or next day.


    One Day Tests has a fantastic clinical team of consultants and GPs. Once you have your results you can book an online video consultation to discuss your results.


    Our clinical team consists of practicing NHS and private GPs, who work closely with our laboratory and can tell you what your blood test results mean for you. Having an integrated laboratory and GP services makes your health journey seamless and extremely efficient.

The results of your Pharmacogenomics DNA Test will be emailed to you as a secured PDF file, ready for your GP and will also be uploaded to our Health Dashboard area of the website. It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Pharmacogenomics DNA Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Pharmacogenomics DNA Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Pharmacogenomics DNA Test.

What are the benefits of a Pharmacogenomics test? 

Pharmacogenomics testing has revealed that more than 7 out of 10 of us are not “normal” metabolisers (the rate at which we break down a substance or medicine in our body) of many commonly prescribed medications covering multiple conditions. This results in a drug being ineffective or resulting in a higher side effect profile in many of us. By identifying how our DNA influences our response to our medications we can reduce the number of side effects we might be experiencing. You may be able to reduce the length of time you are on a drug, as well as improve overall quality of life by starting more effective treatments.

The test is particularly beneficial if you are on five or more medications as you are at a higher risk of experiencing side effects related to drug–drug/drug–gene interactions. These side effects include; weight gain, cardiovascular complications (such as bleeding, bruising, anaemia, fatigue, bradycardia, coughs), sedation, sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues, nephrotoxicity, hormonal imbalances, antimicrobial resistance, nausea and dizziness.

How accurate is this test?

The results meet stringent quality control metrics for DNA isolation and genotyping. SNPs are processed in an OpenArray platform. Each call has an estimated quality value >95%, based on the autocaller algorithm in the TaqMan® Genotyper software (ThermoFisher Scientific). Copy number calls are accepted when confidence values are >95%. The HLA assays are processed using an RT-PCR-based presence/absence assay, and HLA positive calls are sequenced using Sanger technology to confirm. To avoid false negatives in HLA genotyping, if the presence/absence assay results are uncertain and Sanger sequencing results do not confirm them, a positive call is made. 

The annotations and interpretations provided in the report are based on scientific literature and do not take into account drug-drug interactions, medical conditions or other clinical factors that may affect medication response. Gene-drug interactions are ranked according to guidelines, level of evidence and clinical utility. Genetic test results and interpretation may be inaccurate for individuals who have undergone or are receiving non-autologous blood transfusion, tissue, or organ transplant therapies. 

Will my GP be able to use the test results? 

The results are displayed very clearly and are easy to interpret. You will be able to use these to help guide discussions with your GP as to which medication options are likely to be best for you. 

Would I need to do this test again in the future?

No. As our DNA does not change during our life this is a once off test for life. Your medical practitioner reanalyses your report as new possible medications are offered to you, with no need to retest.
