MUMPS IMMUNITY BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

The mumps blood test is used to detect antibodies to the mumps virus, helping determine whether you are currently infected, have had a past infection, or are immune due to vaccination.

Mumps is a contagious viral infection known for causing swollen salivary glands (often near the jawline), fever, headache, and muscle aches. While often mild, it can sometimes lead to complications such as orchitis (testicular swelling), meningitis, or hearing loss.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, the mumps blood test is a useful and often necessary tool when assessing symptoms such as swollen glands around the jaw, fever, or muscle aches, especially if there’s a chance you’ve been exposed to someone with mumps.

I might also recommend this test if you're unsure about your vaccination status, particularly before starting university, travelling abroad, or working in healthcare or childcare, where confirming immunity is important.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Mumps IgG (Immunity) Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Mumps IgG (Immunity) Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Mumps IgG (Immunity) Blood Test.

Can I be immune to mumps without remembering being vaccinated or ill?

Yes, you may have long-lasting IgG antibodies from a past infection or MMR vaccination even if you don’t remember it. The blood test can confirm whether you're immune, which is especially helpful if your medical or vaccination records are incomplete.

What happens if I test positive for mumps IgM antibodies?

A positive IgM result suggests a recent or active mumps infection. Your GP may advise you to self-isolate to prevent spreading the virus and will provide guidance on managing symptoms. Further testing may be used to confirm the diagnosis if needed.

Do I still need the test if I've had the MMR vaccine?

If you've received two doses of the MMR vaccine, you're generally considered protected. However, a blood test may be recommended to confirm immunity in certain situations, such as before starting work in a healthcare setting, during an outbreak, or if you're pregnant or planning pregnancy.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE MUMPS IGG (IMMUNITY) BLOOD TEST?

The mumps blood test is important because it helps identify whether you are immune to mumps or currently infected with the virus, which is essential for both personal health and public safety. Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets and can lead to complications such as testicular inflammation (orchitis), meningitis, hearing loss, and in rare cases, infertility.

By detecting IgG antibodies, the test can confirm whether you have long-term immunity from a previous infection or vaccination. Measuring IgM antibodies, on the other hand, helps diagnose a recent or current infection, particularly during outbreaks or when symptoms are present.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE MUMPS IGG (IMMUNITY) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The mumps blood test may be right for you if you need to confirm whether you're immune to mumps or currently have an active infection. It’s commonly recommended if:

You’re experiencing symptoms such as swollen glands (particularly near the jaw), fever, headache, or muscle aches.

You’re unsure of your MMR vaccination history, especially if you're preparing for travel, university, or healthcare or childcare work.

You’ve been in close contact with someone who has mumps or there’s an outbreak in your area.

You’re pregnant or planning pregnancy and want to check your immunity status.
