METHYLMALONIC ACID (MMA) BLOOD TEST

The MMA blood test measures methylmalonic acid in your blood, providing a reliable way to detect vitamin B12 deficiency even when standard B12 tests appear normal.

Elevated MMA levels indicate your body isn't getting enough active B12 at the cellular level, helping doctors identify deficiencies earlier and more accurately.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, all standard serum B12 tests have limitations, results can appear normal even when you are functionally deficient.

The MMA test offers greater diagnostic accuracy by measuring metabolic function rather than circulating levels alone. This helps you identify risks earlier, particularly those presenting with vague neurological symptoms, unexplained anaemia, or cognitive changes that don't align with your B12 results.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) Blood Test.

Can I take the MMA test if I'm already supplementing with B12?
You can, but it may affect interpretation. If you've recently started B12 supplements, your MMA levels may already be improving, potentially masking a prior deficiency. For the clearest baseline picture, your doctor may recommend testing before starting supplementation or waiting a specific period after stopping. Discuss timing with your healthcare provider for the most useful results. What do my results mean?

Normal MMA levels suggest adequate B12 function at the cellular level. Elevated levels indicate your body isn't processing B12 effectively, pointing to a likely deficiency even if your serum B12 appears normal. Your should interpret your results alongside your symptoms and medical history to determine the best course of action, or speak to one of our GPs.

What's the difference between an MMA test and a standard B12 test?

A standard B12 test measures the total amount of vitamin B12 circulating in your blood. The MMA test goes deeper, measuring how well your body is actually using that B12 at the cellular level. This makes MMA a more sensitive marker for detecting early or functional deficiencies that standard tests might miss.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE METHYLMALONIC ACID (MMA) BLOOD TEST?

Vitamin B12 deficiency often goes undetected because standard blood tests can miss it. You might have adequate B12 circulating in your blood but still be deficient at the cellular level where it matters most. The MMA test fills this gap by revealing how effectively your body is actually using B12, catching hidden deficiencies before they cause lasting damage.

Left untreated, B12 deficiency can lead to serious complications including irreversible nerve damage, cognitive decline, anaemia, and increased risk of cardiovascular issues. Symptoms often develop gradually and can be mistaken for normal ageing or other conditions. By identifying the problem early through MMA testing, you can start treatment promptly and prevent these complications, protecting your long-term neurological health and overall wellbeing.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE METHYLMALONIC ACID (MMA) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you're experiencing persistent fatigue, tingling or numbness in your hands and feet, memory problems, or unexplained balance issues, an MMA test could provide answers.

This test is especially useful if you've had a standard B12 blood test that came back normal but your symptoms persist. It's also recommended for vegetarians, vegans, older adults, and anyone with digestive conditions like Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, or a history of gastric surgery, all of which can impair B12 absorption.

You might also consider this test if you take certain medications long-term, including metformin or proton pump inhibitors, which can affect B12 levels over time. The MMA test offers a clearer picture of how well your body is actually using B12 at the cellular level, catching deficiencies that other tests might miss. Early detection means earlier treatment, helping you avoid potential nerve damage and get back to feeling your best.
