MEMORY & CONCENTRATION SCREEN BLOOD TEST
Problems with memory and concentration are common. The main concern with these symptoms is whether or not they are due to dementia. The memory and concentration screen looks for physical, usually reversible causes of these symptoms that may mimic dementia.
We check a full blood count which gives a general overview of your health but also looks for specific issues such as anaemia or infection which may impact on energy levels and the ability to concentrate.
Levels of vitamin B12 are checked as low levels of this can cause neurological problems including confusion and ‘brain fog’. Low folic acid levels can also cause memory problems and confusion. We check iron levels as iron deficiency anaemia can affect mental function.
We check liver function as liver disease can cause encephalopathy which results in confusion and memory problems. Similarly, we check renal function as the high levels of urea associated with kidney disease can cause confusion. CRP is a marker of inflammation to ensure that symptoms aren’t being caused by infection. In the bone profile, the key marker is calcium as both high and low calcium levels can cause problems with mental function including memory loss and confusion.
Thyroid function is tested as both an underactive and an overactive thyroid can cause confusion and memory problems.
Lastly we check HbA1C, a marker of blood sugar levels over time, as uncontrolled blood sugar levels in diabetes can cause poor memory.
