HS-CRP stands for high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. The hs-CRP test measures tiny amounts of the protein CRP in the blood. CRP is a marker of inflammation and hs-CRP detects low level inflammation which impacts on your long term health risks, particularly with regards to cardiovascular health.

HS-CRP BLOOD TEST

The High Sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) blood test measures very low levels of C-reactive protein, a substance the liver releases into the bloodstream when there’s inflammation in the body.

It’s mainly used to help estimate your risk of heart disease and stroke. Long-term, low-grade inflammation in the blood vessels plays a role in the build-up of fatty plaques (atherosclerosis), so a persistently raised hs-CRP can signal higher cardiovascular risk even when cholesterol looks normal.

  1. CAN I SEE A GP TO DISCUSS MY RESULTS?

    Yes, usually the same or next day.


    One Day Tests has a fantastic clinical team of consultants and GPs. Once you have your results you can book an online video consultation to discuss your results.


    Our clinical team consists of practicing NHS and private GPs, who work closely with our laboratory and can tell you what your blood test results mean for you. Having an integrated laboratory and GP services makes your health journey seamless and extremely efficient.


    This service is not included in the price of the test, it is charged separately, should you wish to book it.

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!

What is the difference between CRP and hsCRP?

CRP is a protein in the blood, levels of which rise with infection, inflammation or injury. A normal CRP test checks for relatively large rises in CRP levels associated with these problems. It is not sensitive enough to detect very low levels of inflammation that are seen in cardiovascular disease. The hsCRP test also measures levels of the CRP protein but is sensitive enough to detect the very small rises in blood levels associated with higher cardiovascular risk.

What does a high hsCRP mean?

A high hsCRP suggests that there is persistent low level inflammation. This is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes. If high levels are detected, it suggests that more aggressive control is needed of other risk factors, such as cholesterol levels, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
