If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Hepatitis B Screen Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What is Hepatitis B Core Total Antibodies - Anti-HBc?

Hepatitis B Core Total Antibodies, abbreviated as Anti-HBc, are antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the core antigens of the hepatitis B virus (HBV).

These core antigens are components of the virus itself, specifically related to the core protein that forms the viral capsid. The presence of Anti-HBc antibodies can be used to diagnose and monitor hepatitis B infections.

Anti-HBc antibodies are usually detectable soon after the onset of symptoms in acute hepatitis B and persist for life. They can indicate both current and past infection.

What is Hepatitis B Surface Antibody - HBsAb?

Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (HBsAb), also known as Anti-HBs, refers to the antibodies that the immune system produces in response to the hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg). The presence of these antibodies in the blood is an important indicator in the diagnosis and monitoring of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections.

The presence of HBsAb generally indicates long-term protection against hepatitis B infection. However, the level of antibodies can decrease over time, and booster doses of the vaccine might be needed depending on the person’s health status and risk of exposure.

The test for HBsAb is used to determine if a person is immune to hepatitis B, either through past infection or successful vaccination.

What is Hepatitis B Surface Antigen - HBsAg?

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) is a protein found on the surface of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It is one of the earliest markers of acute hepatitis B infection and can be used to detect an ongoing infection.

HBsAg is usually detectable in the blood within 1 to 10 weeks after exposure to the virus and before the onset of symptoms. It indicates active viral replication and is a sign of acute infection.

Why take this test?

Hi, I am Dr. Marco Esposito and here is why it's important to take this test.

It is important to make sure that your body can fight off Hep B infection and not pass it on. For this, your level of antibodies need to be up, otherwise you may require a booster vaccine.
