BASIC PRE-OPERATIVE BLOOD TEST

A pre-operative blood panel is an essential step in preparing for elective surgery, helping to confirm that you are medically fit for the procedure. This comprehensive test includes a full blood count (FBC), liver function tests, and advanced urea and electrolyte analysis, providing your surgical team with a clear picture of your overall health. Aligned with guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for patients undergoing intermediate or major operations, this panel screens for conditions that could affect anaesthesia, bleeding risk, or post-surgical recovery.

The pre-op blood panel measures key biomarkers across three categories: a full blood count to assess red and white blood cells and platelets; liver function markers including ALP, AST, ALT, albumin, GGT, globulin, total protein, and total bilirubin; and an advanced electrolyte profile covering sodium, potassium (clinic only), calcium, corrected calcium, chloride, magnesium, and urea. These results give your surgeon and anaesthetist the information they need to plan a safe procedure.

If you have underlying health conditions, additional tests may be required, we recommend discussing your individual needs with your surgical team before booking.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

As doctors, ensuring patients is medically prepared before surgery is a key part of the pre-operative pathway.

This blood panel provides a comprehensive overview of haematological, hepatic, and renal function, enabling you to identify conditions such as anaemia, electrolyte imbalances, or impaired liver function that may need to be addressed prior to the procedure.

Early detection of these abnormalities allows time for further investigation, treatment, or referral, reducing the likelihood of surgical delays or cancellations on the day.

For medical professionals, by ordering this NICE-aligned panel, you can provide the surgical team with the essential baseline data they need to plan a safe anaesthetic and procedure, while also reassuring your patient that they are fully prepared for their operation.

Red flag symptoms for the Basic Pre-operative Blood Test

Even if your blood tests are normal, you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms below because they may be a sign of serious underlying illness:

  • Any unexplained symptoms
  • Joint pains and fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling generally unwell

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Avoid heavy exercise for 48 hours before the test.

You don't need to fast before this test, just do drink plenty of water.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Basic Pre-operative Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Basic Pre-operative Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Basic Pre-operative Blood Test.

Can I use these results for any hospital or surgeon?
Yes, this pre-operative blood panel is designed to meet the standard requirements set out in NICE guidelines and is widely accepted by hospitals and private surgical providers across the UK. However, some surgeons or anaesthetists may request additional tests based on your individual health history or the type of procedure you are having. We recommend checking with your surgical team to confirm their specific requirements before booking your test. How far in advance of my surgery should I have this test?

We recommend having your pre-operative blood tests done between two and four weeks before your scheduled surgery date. This allows enough time for your results to be reviewed by your surgical team and for any abnormalities to be investigated or treated if necessary. If your test is taken too far in advance, your results may no longer accurately reflect your health on the day of the operation, and a repeat test may be required.

What happens if my results are abnormal?

If any of your results fall outside the normal range, don't panic—minor abnormalities are common and may not affect your surgery. Your GP or surgical team will review the findings and decide on the next steps, which could include repeat testing, further investigations, or a referral to a specialist. In some cases, your surgery may be postponed until the issue is resolved to ensure your safety.

Can I use these results for any hospital or surgeon?

Generally yes, this pre-operative blood panel is designed to meet the standard requirements set out in NICE guidelines and is widely accepted by hospitals and private surgical providers across the UK.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE BASIC PRE-OPERATIVE BLOOD TEST?

Pre-operative blood tests play a vital role in ensuring your safety before, during, and after surgery. By assessing your full blood count, liver function, and electrolyte levels, this panel helps identify potential risks such as anaemia, clotting abnormalities, kidney impairment, or liver dysfunction that could complicate anaesthesia or delay healing.

Detecting these issues in advance allows your surgical team to take precautions, adjust medications, or address underlying conditions before you go into theatre.

Ultimately, a thorough pre-op assessment reduces the risk of unexpected complications, supports better surgical outcomes, and gives both you and your medical team greater confidence on the day of your procedure.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE BASIC PRE-OPERATIVE BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

This pre-operative blood panel is ideal if you are preparing for elective surgery and need to confirm your fitness for the procedure. It is particularly suited to patients scheduled for intermediate or major operations, where a thorough assessment of blood health, liver function, and electrolyte balance is required before going under anaesthesia.

If your surgeon or hospital has requested routine pre-op bloods, this panel covers the essential markers recommended by NICE guidelines.

However, if you have underlying health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or a bleeding disorder, you may require additional tests tailored to your specific needs, we recommend speaking with your surgeon or GP to confirm which tests are appropriate for you.
