Cholesterol (Lipids) Blood Test

Cholesterol is an essential part of every cell in our body. However, too much cholesterol running in our bloodstream can lead to cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. This is why monitoring your levels with a cholesterol blood test is vital.

Cholesterol can increase with age, be a result of a poor diet, or high cholesterol levels can run in families. Whatever the reason, a blood test for cholesterol levels means you can make treatment and lifestyle decisions early and take control of your health early on.

A home blood cholesterol test kit from One Day Tests gives you greater flexibility than going to your GP with our rapid turnarounds and highly accurate lab work. You can also track your results on our unique Health Dashboard feature and see how they change over time so you can make better-informed decisions about your lifestyle.

Book your easy home test kit and take charge of your cholesterol levels today. This is ideal for monitoring you cardiac state and ensuring a healthy heart.

About the cholesterol test

Understanding your cardiovascular risk is in fact more complicated than simply measuring your cholesterol levels with a blood test.

Cholesterol can be divided into "good" and "bad" cholesterol. Good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), actually helps lower your cardiovascular risk, while "bad" cholesterol (LDL or non-HDL cholesterol), can cause problems.

A blood test for cholesterol checks for both of these as well as the all-important total cholesterol/HDL ratio: which is essential for accurately assessing your risks. You can use this data along with a number of other parameters such as blood pressure, age, sex and family history, and put it into a QRisk calculator. This estimates your risk of heart attacks and strokes in the next ten years.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Cholesterol is an essential part of every cell in our body but too much cholesterol running in our blood stream can lead to cardiovascular disease including heart attacks and strokes. Sometimes high cholesterol levels run in families, often it is a result of a poor diet, but in either case detecting high levels of cholesterol can let you make treatment and lifestyle decisions that suit you.

Understanding your cardiovascular risk is in fact more complicated than simply measuring your total cholesterol. Cholesterol can be divided into ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) which actually helps lower your cardiovascular risk, and ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL or non-HDL cholesterol) which causes a problem. This test checks for both as well as the all important total cholesterol/HDL ratio which is important for accurately assessing your risks. We can use this data along with a number of other parameters such as blood pressure, age, sex and family history, and put it into the QRisk calculator which estimates your risk of heart attacks and strokes in the next ten years.

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Cholesterol Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

Why are there several different cholesterol results?

Cholesterol can broadly be divided into ‘good’ cholesterol and ‘bad’ cholesterol. Good cholesterol is also known as HDL cholesterol and this is cholesterol bound to proteins that is being carried back to the liver to be processed. High levels of HDL actually lower your cardiovascular risk because it results in cholesterol being removed from the blood stream.

Bad cholesterol (also known as LDL cholesterol) is cholesterol being carried in the blood to different parts of the body. It is this cholesterol that accumulates on the walls of arteries and underlies cardiovascular disease.

The aim of treatment for cholesterol is to reduce LDL and to increase the proportion of HDL. To properly assess your cardiovascular risk we need to know about all the different lipids or fats in your blood.

If my cholesterol is high, will I need medication?

Not necessarily. Broadly speaking we like total cholesterol to be below 5 but, as outlined above, the situation is slightly more complex. Your doctor will usually use the results from your blood tests, alongside a number of other factors such as you age, sex, medical history, blood pressure, and smoking status, to calculate your ‘QRisk’.

This is an estimation of your chance of having a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years. Current UK guidelines recommend that your take medication to lower your cholesterol if you QRisk score is more than 10%. If your cholesterol is on the high side, but your QRisk is still low, then you should probably consider lifestyle changes in the first instance.
