TRAVEL ADVICE FOR PATIENTS TAKING WEIGHT LOSS MEDICATION ABROAD
USE YOUR MEDICINE AS PRESCRIBED
Weight loss medicines must be used only as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take an additional dose, or change your dosing schedule to cover a period of travel unless this has been specifically discussed and agreed with your clinician.
CARRY YOUR MEDICINE IN HAND LUGGAGE
You should carry your weight loss medication, needles, and injection consumables in your hand luggage, not in checked luggage. This helps reduce the risk of your medicine or consumables being lost, damaged, delayed, frozen, overheated, or exposed to unsuitable temperatures during travel.
TAKE ENOUGH CONSUMABLES WITH YOU
Please ensure you take enough injection consumables for the full duration of your trip, including:
Needles.
Alcohol wipes, where used.
A suitable sharps bin or sharps-safe container for safe disposal of used needles.
You should not rely on being able to obtain needles, sharps bins, or injection equipment while abroad.
STORAGE REQUIREMENTS
Weight loss injections must be stored correctly. Please check the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine before you travel.
Mounjaro
Mounjaro should usually be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. It must not be frozen, and you should not use it if it has been frozen. Once in use, Mounjaro KwikPen can be stored unrefrigerated at not above 30°C for up to 30 days, after which the pen must be discarded.
Wegovy
Wegovy should usually be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, away from the cooling element. It must not be frozen, and you should not use it if it has been frozen. During use, Wegovy may be stored unrefrigerated at not above 30°C. Depending on the Wegovy pen presentation, the in-use period may differ, so please follow the patient information leaflet for your specific pen.
PROTECT YOUR MEDICINE DURING TRAVEL
When travelling, consider how your medicine will be kept within the recommended temperature range. You may need to use an appropriate medical travel case or cooling pouch, particularly for longer journeys or travel to hot climates. Avoid direct sunlight, freezing conditions, and placing the medicine directly against ice packs, as freezing can damage the medicine.
CARRY EVIDENCE OF YOUR PRESCRIPTION
Mounjaro and Wegovy are not controlled drugs in the UK. They are also commonly prescribed for patients with diabetes, weight management, and cardiovascular risk-related conditions. However, medicine laws vary between countries. These medicines, or the needles used to administer them, may still be subject to tighter controls, import restrictions, or documentation requirements in the country you are visiting or passing through.
Patients travelling abroad with weight loss medication should therefore carry evidence that the medicine has been prescribed for them. Before travelling, please request a copy of your current prescription by emailing: hello@onedaytests.com
This is important because your dose may have changed since your last weight loss medicine was supplied. Your current prescription provides more accurate supporting evidence if you are asked about your medication while travelling.
CHECK THE RULES BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
Medicine laws can vary between countries and may change over time. This includes the country you are travelling to and any countries you pass through in transit. Patients should err on the side of caution and make sure they are properly prepared before travelling. This is particularly important when carrying injectable medicines, needles, or sharps disposal equipment.
BEFORE YOU TRAVEL, PLEASE ENSURE YOU HAVE:
Enough weight loss medication for your trip.
Your medicine in its original packaging where possible.
The pharmacy dispensing label attached where possible.
A copy of your current prescription.
Enough needles, wipes, and injection consumables for the full trip.
A suitable sharps bin or sharps-safe container.
A plan to keep the medicine within the recommended storage conditions.
Checked any relevant rules for the country you are visiting or travelling through.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
Weight loss medication must be used only as prescribed. Patients should not adjust their dosing schedule for travel unless advised to do so by their clinician.
