About the test

Progesterone is an important female sex hormone and one of its key roles is to prepare the lining of the womb to receive a fertilised egg.

Levels of progesterone rise and fall throughout the menstrual cycle. In a standard 28 day cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14 (where day 1 is the first day of your period). Following this, levels of progesterone rise, reaching a peak at day 21 (a level above 30nmol/L indicates that ovulation has occurred).

If your cycle is a different length, then you should take the test 7 days before you expect your next period to begin e.g. if you have a 35 day cycle you should take the test on day 28.

TURNAROUND TIME

Irregular menstrual cycles, such as unusually long cycles or missed periods, may warrant investigation into hormone levels including progesterone. A progesterone test can help determine whether ovulation is occurring and if there are any hormonal imbalances contributing to menstrual irregularities.

Progesterone levels can fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy, so the timing of when progesterone should be measured depends on the specific reason for the test.

Menstrual cycle monitoring: If the goal is to assess ovulation or evaluate the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, progesterone is typically measured about 7 days before the expected start of the next menstrual period. This timing corresponds to the peak of progesterone production after ovulation. For example, if your cycle is typically 28 days, then progesterone should be measured around day 21.
Fertility assessment: In the context of fertility evaluation, progesterone is often measured in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle (around 7 days post-ovulation) to confirm ovulation. This helps determine whether progesterone levels are adequate to support a potential pregnancy.
Monitoring early pregnancy: If there are concerns about the viability of a pregnancy or risk of miscarriage, progesterone levels may be measured in early pregnancy. However, the timing for this measurement can vary depending on the specific circumstances and healthcare provider requirement. We cannot advise on timings in this case, please refer to your requesting practitioner.

Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!

Home test kit for Progesterone Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.
