DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, the NIPT5 test represents one of the most comprehensive non-invasive prenatal screening options currently available. It not only covers the key chromosomal conditions, including Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome and Patau’s syndrome, but also extends screening to two additional sex chromosome conditions.

This broader scope allows GPs to give patients a more complete picture of their baby’s genetic health earlier in pregnancy, without exposing them to the risks of invasive testing.

Unlike NHS screening, which is generally only offered to women who meet certain higher-risk criteria, NIPT5 is available to all expectant mothers who want the reassurance it provides.

For many GPs, NIPT5 is an invaluable tool for guiding sensitive discussions, managing patient anxiety and planning next steps where needed. By delivering results quickly and accurately, it improves the care pathway, ensuring that both mother and baby receive timely attention, tailored advice and the best possible support.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the PrenatalSAFE 5 NIPT Blood Test.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Please make sure you’re at least 10 weeks pregnant, since the test’s accuracy depends on there being enough foetal DNA in your bloodstream.

You will need to know the type of your pregnancy, i.e. you must have a scan before this test to determine if your pregnancy is:

  1. Single pregnancy, i.e. one baby OR
  2. Identical twins

This test does the overall gene analysis in the mother, NOT per baby, so it only works if it's a single baby or identical babies. Your scan will confirm this and you will need to tell this to our phlebotomist at the clinic, who will take your blood and complete the form.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the PrenatalSAFE 5 NIPT Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the PrenatalSAFE 5 NIPT Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the PrenatalSAFE 5 NIPT Blood Test.

What is the NIPT5 blood test?

The NIPT5 blood test is an advanced, non-invasive prenatal screening that analyses tiny fragments of your baby’s DNA found in your bloodstream. Like NIPT3, it screens for common chromosomal conditions, but NIPT5 also offers broader insight by including additional conditions and optional genetic checks.

With just a simple blood draw, it gives you clear, accurate information about your baby’s health from as early as 10 weeks, helping you feel informed and reassured during your pregnancy.

How is NIPT5 different from standard NHS screening?

While the NHS typically offers NIPT 3, and only to women who are considered at higher risk after initial screening, the NIPT 5 test is available to all expectant mothers without the need to meet eligibility criteria.

It also goes beyond standard NHS NIPT by testing for more genetic conditions, giving you a fuller picture earlier in your pregnancy. This means you can make decisions with confidence, without waiting for referral or additional testing later.

Is the test safe for me and my baby?

Yes. NIPT5 is completely safe and non-invasive. There are no needles near your baby and no risks like those associated with procedures such as amniocentesis or CVS. The process is simply a quick blood draw from your arm, making it comfortable, stress-free, and risk-free for both mother and baby. For many, this is the most reassuring way to gather important information early in pregnancy.

When should I have the NIPT5 test?

You can take the NIPT5 test from 10 weeks into your pregnancy, once there is enough foetal DNA in your blood to ensure accurate analysis. The advantage of early testing is that you receive vital information sooner, allowing more time to plan, prepare, and discuss next steps with your GP or midwife if necessary.

Do I need to prepare for the test?

You will need to know the type of your pregnancy, via a scan.

Other than that, no special preparation is required. You don’t need to fast or change your normal routine. Staying well hydrated before your appointment can make the blood draw quicker and easier.

It’s also important to let us know if you’ve had any recent blood transfusions, transplants, or similar treatments, as these can sometimes affect results.

What conditions does NIPT5 detect?

The NIPT5 test screens for the three most common chromosomal conditions: Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards’ syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau’s syndrome (trisomy 13), as well as two additional conditions involving sex chromosomes.

This extended screening gives you more comprehensive information about your baby’s genetic health, offering broader reassurance and more time to plan if anything unexpected is found.

How accurate is the NIPT5 test?

NIPT5 has an accuracy rate of over 99% for detecting Down’s syndrome, with very high accuracy for the other conditions it screens for. This makes it one of the most reliable prenatal screening options available. While it’s still a screening rather than a diagnostic test, its precision greatly reduces the likelihood of false positives and unnecessary further testing.

How quickly will I get my results?

Most NIPT5 results are ready within 5–7 working days, allowing you to move forward with clarity and confidence. The fast turnaround time means less waiting and worrying, and more time focusing on your pregnancy and preparing for your baby’s arrival.

What happens if the test shows a high risk?

If your NIPT5 results indicate a higher chance of a condition, the laboratory will get in touch with you to offer consultation on the next steps, and your GP or midwife will guide you through the findings.

This may include referral for further diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis or CVS. Having this information early ensures you have time to consider your options, seek specialist advice, and access the right care and support.

Can I find out my baby’s sex with NIPT5?

Yes, the NIPT5 test can identify your baby’s sex from as early as 10 weeks with very high accuracy. This is entirely optional and will be discussed before your test. For many parents, it’s a special way to start bonding with their baby, while others choose to keep it a surprise.

Either way, the decision is yours.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE PRENATALSAFE 5 NIPT BLOOD TEST?

NIPT5 is important because it provides expectant mothers with early, accurate and comprehensive information about their baby’s genetic health, all through a simple and completely safe blood test. By screening for five key chromosomal conditions, including Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and two sex chromosome conditions, it offers a broader scope than many standard tests.

Having access to this information from as early as 10 weeks allows more time to prepare emotionally, medically and practically if further action is needed. Unlike NHS screening, which is often only available to women meeting higher-risk criteria, NIPT5 is accessible to all, meaning more parents can benefit from its reassurance. For many, this test reduces uncertainty, helps guide important decisions and provides peace of mind during the crucial early stages of pregnancy.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE PRENATALSAFE 5 NIPT BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The NIPT5 blood test is a safe and non-invasive screening option for expectant mothers who want the most comprehensive early insight into their baby’s genetic health. By analysing tiny fragments of your baby’s DNA present in your bloodstream, it can accurately assess the likelihood of five key chromosomal conditions, including Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and two sex chromosome conditions, from as early as 10 weeks. This quick and simple blood test provides reassurance without the risks associated with invasive procedures, making it a preferred choice for many parents-to-be seeking detailed, reliable information early in pregnancy.

Whether NIPT5 is the right test for you depends on how much information you want about your baby’s genetic health early in pregnancy and how important reassurance is for you. NIPT5 is ideal if you would like a safe, highly accurate screening test that not only checks for Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome and Patau’s syndrome, but also screens for two additional sex chromosome conditions. It can be taken from as early as 10 weeks, giving you results quickly and without any risk to you or your baby.

Unlike NHS NIPT, which is usually only available to women at higher risk after initial screening, NIPT5 is open to all expectant mothers, meaning you can choose it proactively rather than waiting for a referral. If you value early clarity, want the most comprehensive screening available and prefer to avoid the uncertainty of staged testing, NIPT5 may be the right choice for you.
