LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH) BLOOD TEST

The Luteinising Hormone (LH) blood test is used to measure the levels of LH, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a key role in the regulation of the reproductive system.

In women, LH helps control the menstrual cycle and triggers ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary.

In men, it stimulates the production of testosterone in the testes.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

In women, LH levels fluctuate throughout the cycle. Usually this test is done on a specific day, often day 2 to 5 of your cycle, if investigating fertility or hormone balance.

If testing for ovulation, the timing will vary and may involve multiple LH tests to track the mid-cycle surge.

Please consult your GP or medical professional on the required timings for your investigation.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Blood Test.

Can LH levels help confirm ovulation?

Yes, a surge in LH levels typically occurs 24 to 36 hours before ovulation, making it a key marker for predicting fertile days. Blood tests or home LH ovulation kits can detect this rise, which is especially helpful for those trying to conceive or tracking their cycle for fertility planning.

What does a high LH level mean?

In women, high LH levels may indicate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), menopause, or premature ovarian failure. In men, elevated LH can suggest the testes aren’t responding properly, leading the body to produce more LH in compensation. High LH may also point to a pituitary gland disorder in either sex.

Can LH testing help with diagnosing delayed or early puberty?

Absolutely. In children, measuring LH is useful for evaluating whether puberty is occurring too early (precocious puberty) or too late (delayed puberty). LH, often tested alongside other hormones like FSH and testosterone or oestradiol, helps determine if the puberty pattern is normal or requires further investigation.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH) BLOOD TEST?

The LH blood test is important because it provides crucial insight into how well your reproductive hormones are functioning. Luteinising Hormone (LH) plays a central role in regulating the menstrual cycle in women and stimulating testosterone production in men. Abnormal LH levels can indicate a range of issues, from fertility problems and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) to pituitary gland disorders or menopause.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The LH blood test may be right for you if you’re experiencing symptoms or conditions related to fertility, hormone imbalance, or reproductive health. In women, it’s often recommended if you have irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or symptoms of menopause. It can also help pinpoint whether and when you're ovulating, making it useful if you're trying to conceive.

In men, the test may be advised if there are signs of low testosterone, reduced libido, or infertility, as LH helps regulate testosterone production. It’s also useful for assessing puberty timing in both boys and girls - either if it seems unusually early or delayed.

  1. SYMPTOMS AND TAGS

Chronic fatigue, Erectile disfunction, Fatigue, Hair loss, Lack of libido, Loss of muscle bulk and Low mood

WHY ARE BLOOD TESTS IMPORTANT?
