IMMUNOGLOBULIN G (IGG) BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most common type of antibody found in the blood and plays a vital role in the body’s immune response.

It helps protect against infections by identifying and neutralising harmful bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances.

IgG is produced by specialised white blood cells known as plasma cells and is essential for long-term immunity, often increasing in response to previous exposure to pathogens or vaccinations.

IMMUNOGLOBULIN G (IGG) BLOOD TEST

An IgG blood test is used to assess the levels of this antibody in your system and can help diagnose a variety of conditions.

Low IgG levels may indicate an increased susceptibility to infections, immune system disorders, or certain chronic illnesses. Elevated IgG levels, on the other hand, may be seen in autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, or liver conditions.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is a critical component of the body’s immune defence, and testing its levels can offer valuable clinical insights.

From a medical perspective, IgG antibodies are responsible for long-term protection after an infection or vaccination, as they “remember” pathogens and help the body respond more rapidly to future exposure.

As a result, evaluating IgG levels can help identify whether a patient’s immune system is functioning properly or if there's an underlying immune deficiency that may be affecting their ability to fight infections.

For patients who experience frequent or unusually severe infections, or those being assessed for autoimmune or chronic inflammatory conditions, an IgG test is often part of the diagnostic workup.

Your Results and Health Dashboard

The results of your IgG Blood Test will be emailed to you as a secured PDF file, ready for your GP and will also be uploaded to our Health Dashboard area of the website. It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

It's free and is available with all of our tests.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the IgG Blood Test.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

There are no special instructions for this test.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the IgG Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the IgG Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the IgG Blood Test.

What can cause low IgG levels?

Low IgG levels may be caused by a range of conditions, including primary immune deficiencies (such as Common Variable Immunodeficiency), chronic illnesses, certain cancers, or long-term use of immunosuppressive medications.

People with low IgG may experience frequent or severe infections due to a weakened immune response.

Can high IgG levels be a sign of disease?

Yes, elevated IgG levels can be associated with chronic infections, autoimmune diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, and certain types of cancers like multiple myeloma.

Persistently high levels may indicate that the immune system is overactive or reacting to an ongoing issue in the body, and further testing is usually recommended.

Is the IgG test the same as a food intolerance test?

No, they are not the same. The clinical IgG test is used to assess immune function and detect possible immune deficiencies or chronic diseases.

In contrast, some private labs offer IgG-based food intolerance tests, but these are not widely accepted by the medical community due to limited scientific evidence supporting their accuracy or usefulness in diagnosing food sensitivities. If you are looking for a food allergy test, our laboratory runs the Alex 2 Allergy Screen for 295 biomarkers.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE IGG BLOOD TEST?

The Immunoglobulin G (IgG) blood test is important because it provides essential insight into how well your immune system is functioning.

IgG is the body’s most abundant antibody and plays a crucial role in recognising and neutralising harmful bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders.

By measuring your IgG levels, you can identify whether your immune system is responding appropriately to infections or if there may be a deficiency or overactivity that needs attention.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE IGG BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The Immunoglobulin G (IgG) blood test may be right for you if you're experiencing frequent, recurring infections or if yoу suspect an issue with your immune system.

It can help determine whether your body is producing enough IgG to defend against bacteria and viruses.

This test is often recommended if you’ve had multiple sinus, lung, or gastrointestinal infections, or if there's a concern about an underlying immunodeficiency or autoimmune condition.
