CADMIUM BLOOD TEST
A cadmium blood test measures the amount of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal used in batteries, pigments, plastics and some solder, in your bloodstream. Because cadmium is absorbed mainly through inhalation of cigarette smoke or industrial fumes, a venous blood sample offers a snapshot of very recent exposure (the previous few days).
You can request the analysis when you need to confirm acute poisoning, to monitor workers in high-risk occupations (such as battery manufacture, welding or waste-incineration), or to investigate unexplained abnormalities in kidney or liver function that might be linked to metal exposure.
Knowing your cadmium level is important because the metal accumulates silently and can damage multiple organs long before routine blood chemistry appears abnormal. Symptoms that may prompt testing include persistent nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, metallic taste, shortness of breath, bone pain, or a combination of tiredness and swollen ankles suggesting impaired kidney filtration.
Smokers may also be advised to have the test. Early detection allows prompt removal from further exposure and medical management aimed at protecting the kidneys, lungs and bones.
