LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN (LDL) BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

The LDL blood test is used to measure the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your blood, commonly known as “bad” cholesterol.

While LDL plays an important role in transporting cholesterol to cells where it’s needed, high levels can lead to a build-up of fatty deposits in your arteries.

Over time, this can narrow or block the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. For this reason, LDL is a key marker in evaluating your cardiovascular health.

LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN (LDL) BLOOD TEST

The LDL blood test measures the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in your blood, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to the cells, but when levels are too high, it can build up in the walls of arteries, forming plaques that narrow and harden the arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis.

This increases the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke, making the LDL test a critical tool in assessing cardiovascular health.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, the LDL blood test is a key part of assessing your risk of developing heart disease or stroke.

It tells us how much low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is circulating in your blood, the type most likely to cause fatty build-up in your arteries.

High LDL levels often don’t cause symptoms, so the only way to detect and manage this risk is through regular testing, particularly if you have risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of heart problems.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Low density lipoprotein (LDL) Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Low density lipoprotein (LDL) Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Low density lipoprotein (LDL) Blood Test.

Do I need to fast before an LDL blood test?

You do not need to completely fast for this blood test but you should avoid eating fatty foods for at least 8 hours before you take the test.

What is a healthy LDL level?

For most adults, an LDL level below 3.0 mmol/L is considered healthy. If you have heart disease, diabetes, or other risk factors, your target may be lower, below 2.0 mmol/L in some cases.

Can I lower my LDL cholesterol without medication?

Yes, many people can lower their LDL through lifestyle changes such as eating a heart-healthy diet (low in saturated fats and trans fats), increasing physical activity, stopping smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight.

However, if your levels remain high or you’re at high risk, your doctor may also recommend medication like statins.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN (LDL) BLOOD TEST?

The LDL blood test is important because it helps identify your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. LDL cholesterol, often called “bad” cholesterol, can build up on the walls of your arteries, forming plaques that narrow or block blood flow. This process, known as atherosclerosis, increases the chance of serious complications like heart attacks and strokes, often without any warning signs.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE LOW DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN (LDL) BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

The LDL blood test may be right for you if you want to assess your risk of cardiovascular disease or monitor how well you're managing your cholesterol levels.

It’s commonly recommended as part of a routine health check, especially if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, a family history of heart disease, or if you're over the age of 40.

It’s also important if you’re on cholesterol-lowering medication or have had previous heart or vascular issues.

Even if you feel healthy, checking your LDL levels can be a proactive step in preventing heart problems before they develop. High LDL cholesterol often doesn’t cause symptoms, so the only way to know your levels is through a blood test.
