COPPER BLOOD TEST

Copper is an essential trace mineral involved in critical processes like iron absorption, immune function, and the development of connective tissues. Abnormally low or high copper levels can indicate conditions such as Wilson’s disease (a genetic disorder causing copper overload), malabsorption syndromes, or other metabolic abnormalities.

Analysing copper levels alongside related markers, such as ceruloplasmin, can offer a more comprehensive picture of a your copper status and aid in diagnosing and managing underlying health concerns.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, a copper blood test is a valuable tool when trying to understand a range of unexplained symptoms, particularly those affecting the nervous system, liver, or blood.

If a patient presents with fatigue, neurological changes, anaemia, or signs of liver dysfunction, especially at a younger age, we may consider copper testing to rule out rare but serious conditions like Wilson’s disease. It also helps assess whether a patient is absorbing nutrients properly, which is important in conditions like coeliac disease or after certain surgeries.

We may also use this test to monitor copper levels in patients who are taking supplements, or who may have been exposed to excess copper through environmental or occupational sources.

Identifying abnormal copper levels early allows us to intervene before more serious damage occurs, whether that means adjusting medications, starting treatment, or referring to a specialist.

Your Results and Health Dashboard

The results of your Copper Blood Test will be emailed to you as a secured PDF file, ready for your GP and will also be uploaded to our Health Dashboard area of the website. It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

It's free and is available with all of our tests.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Copper Blood Test.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Fasting is not required for a copper blood test.

Clinic appointment - how to prepare for the Copper Blood Test

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Read the instructions in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS section
  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit - how it works with the Copper Blood Test

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Copper Blood Test.

What can cause abnormal copper levels in the blood?

Abnormal copper levels can result from a variety of causes.

Low levels (copper deficiency) may occur due to malabsorption conditions like coeliac disease, long-term use of zinc supplements (which interfere with copper absorption), or after gastrointestinal surgery.

High levels may be linked to conditions such as Wilson’s disease, chronic liver disease, or excessive copper intake through supplements or environmental exposure (e.g., contaminated water or industrial sources).

Understanding the cause of abnormal copper levels is essential, as it guides the treatment approach. For example, copper deficiency might be managed through dietary changes or supplements, while excess copper may require chelation therapy or more specialised care.

How is a copper blood test done, and is it different from a ceruloplasmin test?

A ceruloplasmin test is often done alongside a copper test. Ceruloplasmin is a protein that carries copper in the blood, and its levels can help interpret copper results more accurately.

For example, in Wilson’s disease, blood copper might appear low, but urine copper is high and ceruloplasmin is low, these patterns help form a more complete picture.

What happens if my copper levels are too high or too low?

If your copper levels are too low, your GP may investigate further for malabsorption disorders or nutritional deficiencies, and recommend dietary changes or supplements. Low copper can lead to symptoms like fatigue, numbness, pale skin, or poor immune function, so correcting the deficiency is important for overall health.

If your levels are too high, the cause might be over-supplementation, liver disease, or a rare genetic disorder like Wilson’s disease. In these cases, you might be referred to a specialist for further testing and treatment, which could include medications to help remove excess copper or manage its effects. Either way, identifying abnormal levels early allows for effective treatment and monitoring.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE COPPER BLOOD TEST?

A copper blood test is important because copper plays a vital role in many of the body’s functions, including energy production, nervous system health, and the formation of red blood cells.

Both too much and too little copper can cause serious health problems. For example, low copper levels can lead to anaemia, bone weakness, or neurological issues, while high levels can damage the liver, brain, and other organs.

By measuring copper in your blood, the test helps identify imbalances that might be linked to genetic conditions like Wilson’s disease, malabsorption disorders, or environmental exposure.

Early detection allows for timely treatment, which can prevent complications and improve long-term health outcomes.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE COPPER BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

A copper blood test may be appropriate if you’re experiencing unexplained neurological or psychiatric symptoms such as confusion, mood changes, memory problems, or muscle weakness.

It’s also considered when there are signs of liver disease, especially in younger individuals, as abnormal copper levels can indicate disorders like Wilson’s disease, a rare genetic condition where copper builds up in the body.

Your doctor might also order this test if there are concerns about malnutrition, gastrointestinal issues affecting nutrient absorption, or if you're taking supplements or medications that could alter copper levels.

In some cases, the test is used to investigate symptoms like fatigue, brittle hair, pale skin, or anaemia, particularly if other causes have been ruled out. If you've been exposed to high levels of copper, such as through contaminated water or workplace exposure, testing can help check for toxicity.
