NOTES FROM THE LAB

Hello! My name is Jamila Quaye and I am a senior biomedical scientist with a specialism in haematology, here at One Day Tests laboratory.

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) - description and reference ranges

What is it?

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is an enzyme that the body uses during the process of turning sugar into energy.

This is the value for total LDH. LDH is found in many of the tissues and organs, muscles, liver, heart, pancreas, kidneys, brain and blood cells.

Reference ranges

If your indicative total LDH level is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

Lower LDH level indicates that tissue damage is minimal, if any.

Speak to you GP if you are concerned.

If your indicative total LDH level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

Elevated levels of LDH and changes in the ratio of the LDH isoenzymes usually indicate some type of tissue damage. Kidney disease and liver disease are possible causes.

Please discuss this result with your GP.
