NOTES FROM THE LAB

Hello! My name is Jamila Quaye and I am a senior biomedical scientist with a specialism in haematology, here at One Day Tests laboratory.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) - description and reference ranges

What is it?

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is an antibody blood protein. IgM is the largest antibody, and it is the first antibody to appear in the response to initial exposure to infection/antigen.

Reference ranges

If your indicative IgM level is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

An IgM deficiency is a health condition where your body does not make enough Immunoglobulin M (IgM). People with IgM deficiency are more likely to get infections or not be able to fight them off very easily or quickly.

You can discuss this result with your GP if you are concerned.

If your indicative IgM level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

High levels of IgM generally implies that you have an infection or an inflammatory or autoimmune disease. This also generally involves your central nervous system. In cases of an autoimmune disorder, this causes your immune system to attack your own healthy cells by mistake. This can lead to various problems with health.

You can discuss this result with your GP if you are concerned.

WHAT ARE THE 7 SIGNS OF INSULIN RESISTANCE?

Insulin resistance is a common metabolic condition that often develops gradually over many years. In its early stages, it may cause few obvious symptoms, which is why many people do not realise they have it until blood tests reveal a problem.

WHAT IS A NORMAL INSULIN LEVEL IN THE BLOOD?

Insulin plays a vital role in regulating blood sugar levels and helping the body use glucose for energy. While many people are familiar with blood glucose testing, fewer understand what insulin levels can reveal about their metabolic health.

CAN A BLOOD TEST SHOW INSULIN LEVELS?

Many people know that blood tests can measure glucose levels, but fewer realise that insulin itself can also be measured through a blood test. An insulin blood test measures the amount of insulin circulating in your bloodstream and can provide valuable information about how your body is managing blood sugar. This type of testing may help investigate insulin resistance, assess diabetes risk, explore possible causes of low blood sugar, and support the diagnosis of certain metabolic conditions.
