Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) - description and reference ranges

What is it?

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FHS) is one of the gonadotrophic hormones, together with Luteinising hormone (LH). These are normally tested together and are produced by the pituitary gland. FSH is responsible for puberty development and the development and function of ovaries and testes.

Reference ranges

If your indicative FSH concentration is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

Low levels of follicle stimulating hormone can lead to incomplete development during puberty or poor subsequent ovarian function.

Please discuss this result with your GP.

If your indicative FSH concentration level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

Usually, elevated levels of follicle stimulating hormone are a sign of ovary problems or testis malfunction.

Please discuss this result with your GP.

This test measures the total level of FSH in the blood, the hormone responsible for growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, which are structures that contain and nurture the developing eggs (oocytes).
