ULTIMATE VITAMINS AND MINERALS BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

The ultimate vitamins and minerals blood test measures key biomarkers that reflect your nutritional status by testing the levels of micronutrients in your blood.

These markers include vitamin D which is important for bone health and immunity, folic acid and vitamin B12 which are involved in the process of making blood and maintaining the health of the nervous system, ferritin which reflects the body's store of iron, and magnesium, calcium and other electrolytes which are involved in the conduction of nerve impulses and muscle contractions.

ULTIMATE VITAMINS AND MINERALS BLOOD TEST

Check and manage the level of 10 key vitamins and minerals with this test.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential for the healthy functioning of most body systems, particularly in the production of blood cells and nervous system function. Symptoms of low B12 can include persistent tiredness, low energy, and headaches, among others.

This test measures both total and active levels of Vitamin B12. Total B12 measures all forms in the blood but does not indicate how much is available for the body to use. Active B12, by contrast, refers to the forms the body can immediately utilise for energy metabolism and nerve function.

Measuring both is important, as not all forms of B12 are biologically usable. Relying on total B12 alone can be misleading and may not provide a true picture of a person's B12 status.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays an essential role in a wide range of bodily functions. It is naturally produced in the skin upon exposure to sunlight in its active form, D3. Adequate levels are important for bone health, immune function, muscle strength, mood regulation, heart health, and calcium regulation. There is also emerging evidence linking healthy Vitamin D levels to a reduced risk of certain cancers, autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic disease more broadly.

Vitamin D can be obtained through oily fish, fortified foods, and supplements, as well as through sun exposure. A combination of all three is often the most effective way to maintain adequate levels. However, it is important to note that excessive Vitamin D intake can lead to toxicity, so professional guidance is recommended before starting high-dose supplements.

Vitamin B9 - Folate

Vitamin B9, also known as folate or folic acid, is a water-soluble B vitamin that plays a vital role in many of the body's key functions. Since the body is unable to produce it naturally, folate must be obtained through food or supplements, making it an important nutrient to maintain through diet.

Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral found in foods such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and wholegrains. It is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, making it critical to almost every aspect of health and bodily function.

It plays a key role in energy production, muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, bone health, and heart health. Low magnesium levels have been linked to fatigue, muscle cramps, poor sleep, anxiety, and an increased risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Sodium

Sodium plays a vital role in maintaining the body's fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contractions. It is found naturally in many foods and is most commonly consumed through table salt. Sodium helps to regulate blood pressure, supports the transmission of nerve signals, and ensures that muscles, including the heart, contract and relax properly. While adequate sodium intake is necessary for good health, it is important to maintain the right balance, as consistently high levels can contribute to raised blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Calcium

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and is best known for its essential role in building and maintaining strong, healthy bones and teeth. However, its importance extends well beyond bone health. Calcium is also critical for muscle function, nerve transmission, blood clotting, and the regulation of heart rhythm. It is found in a variety of foods, including dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and fortified foods. Since the body cannot produce calcium on its own, it must be obtained through diet or supplementation. Without adequate calcium intake, the body will draw on reserves stored in the bones, which over time can lead to reduced bone density and conditions such as osteoporosis.

Potassium

Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that plays a crucial role in maintaining many of the body's vital functions. It is found naturally in a wide range of foods, including bananas, potatoes, leafy greens, and legumes. Potassium works closely with sodium to regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions throughout the body. It is particularly important for heart health, as it helps to maintain a normal heart rhythm and supports healthy blood pressure levels by counteracting the effects of sodium.

Zinc

Zinc is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the body, making it important for a wide range of physiological processes. It is found naturally in foods such as meat, shellfish, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Zinc plays a particularly important role in supporting the immune system, helping the body to fight off infections and heal wounds.

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Ultimate Vitamins and Minerals Blood Test.

What’s the difference between total and active vitamin B12?

Total vitamin B12 measures all circulating forms of B12, including those not readily available for use.

Active B12 (holotranscobalamin) reflects the fraction that is actually accessible to cells.

Testing both provides a more accurate picture of functional B12 status, especially in early or borderline deficiencies.
