A manganese blood test measures the level of manganese, an essential trace mineral, in your bloodstream. It helps detect deficiencies or toxic levels that may be linked to symptoms like fatigue, memory issues, or coordination problems.

Simple and accurate blood test from a laboratory you can speak to.

COPPER BLOOD TEST OVERVIEW

This test determines whether your manganese levels are within the normal range, too low (which may indicate malnutrition or absorption issues), or too high (which could point to exposure or a problem with how your body processes the mineral, such as liver dysfunction).

MANGANESE BLOOD TEST

While the body needs only a small amount, both too little and too much manganese can lead to health problems. This test is usually ordered when there are symptoms that might suggest manganese imbalance, such as tremors, coordination issues, fatigue, or cognitive changes, particularly if no other cause is apparent.

From a medical perspective, the test is most relevant for people with suspected nutritional deficiencies, liver disease, or those who may have been exposed to manganese through occupational or environmental sources (such as welding or contaminated water).

It's also sometimes used in cases of suspected heavy metal toxicity. Though not a routine test, it can provide valuable insight when symptoms or history point toward possible manganese imbalance.

We are extremely proud of our very short turnaround times and a very efficient laboratory processes, you will start receiving results as soon as they are available and have completed clinical validation.

Whilst we accommodate the shortest of time scales, with some results available within hours, for this particular test the usual turnaround time is: 5 working days.

  1. WILL I HAVE A GENERAL EXPLANATION OF MY RESULTS?

Yes, our doctors put a huge amount of effort into your online Health Dashboard, which will have explanations of what each biomarker is, the normal reference ranges and what it means if you are outside of them.

This service is included in the price of all our tests.

  1. CAN I SEE A GP TO DISCUSS MY RESULTS?

Yes, usually the same or next day.

One Day Tests has a fantastic clinical team of consultants and GPs. Once you have your results you can book an online video consultation to discuss your results.

Our clinical team consists of practicing NHS and private GPs, who work closely with our laboratory and can tell you what your blood test results mean for you. Having an integrated laboratory and GP services makes your health journey seamless and extremely efficient.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

From a GP’s perspective, a manganese blood test is a useful diagnostic tool in specific clinical situations. If a patient presents with neurological symptoms such as tremors, slowed movement, or mood changes, and more common causes like vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems have been ruled out, we may consider checking manganese levels, especially if there’s a history of liver disease, malnutrition, or possible industrial exposure.

While it's not part of routine testing, it becomes important when trying to explain unexplained neurological signs or when assessing for heavy metal toxicity.

Detecting abnormal manganese levels early can help prevent long-term complications and guide appropriate referrals, whether that means nutritional support, environmental assessment, or further specialist investigation.

Your Results and Health Dashboard

The results of your Manganese Blood Test will be emailed to you as a secured PDF file, ready for your GP and will also be uploaded to our Health Dashboard area of the website. It’s a unique and powerful tool, powered by our in-house clinical analysis research, to match your biomarkers across test panels and symptoms, as well as provide clinical commentary on all individual biomarkers you tested for.

The health dashboard will also provide "panel level" commentary - a birds eye view of the biomarkers that were tested. This feature allows you to view your test results and clinical commentary, and compare them to previous results, giving you a clear understanding of how your health is progressing.

By using the Health Dashboard, you can identify changes in your biomarkers and make necessary adjustments to your lifestyle. This added value is immense, as it empowers you to monitor your health and make informed decisions about your well-being.

It's free and is available with all of our tests.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Manganese Blood Test.

What symptoms might suggest a manganese imbalance?

Symptoms of manganese imbalance can be quite subtle at first but may become serious over time. Too much manganese, particularly from environmental or occupational exposure, can lead to neurological issues such as tremors, difficulty walking, muscle stiffness, mood changes, or memory problems, symptoms that often resemble Parkinson’s disease. On the other hand, too little manganese (though rare) might cause fatigue, bone weakness, or poor wound healing.

Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions, a manganese test is usually considered after more common causes have been ruled out. If there's a known risk factor, like welding work or liver disease, it becomes an especially important part of the diagnostic process.

What causes high or low manganese levels in the blood?

High manganese levels are most often linked to long-term exposure through inhalation in industrial settings (like welding) or in people with liver disease, where the body can't properly remove excess manganese. In rare cases, contaminated water or overuse of supplements can also lead to elevated levels. High levels can build up in the brain and cause movement or cognitive issues over time.

Low manganese levels, while much less common, are usually related to poor nutrition, chronic gastrointestinal conditions (like Crohn’s disease), or prolonged intravenous feeding without proper trace minerals. Identifying the cause helps determine whether lifestyle changes, supplements, or medical intervention are needed.

How is the test different from other heavy metal tests?

The manganese blood test is specific to one trace element, manganese, and is typically ordered when there are clear clinical reasons to suspect an imbalance. Unlike broader heavy metal panels that test for several elements (like lead, mercury, or arsenic), this test zeroes in on manganese alone, offering more precise results when it’s the suspected issue.

It's also worth noting that the interpretation of manganese levels depends on context. For instance, elevated blood levels don't always mean toxicity unless paired with symptoms and risk factors. That’s why GPs use the test alongside clinical history and other investigations to make a well-rounded diagnosis.

WHY HAVE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY HAVE THE MANGANESE BLOOD TEST?

A manganese blood test is important because both too little and too much manganese can cause serious health problems, particularly affecting the brain and nervous system.

While the body needs small amounts of manganese for functions like bone formation, metabolism, and nerve health, excess levels, often due to environmental or occupational exposure, can lead to toxicity.

Identifying abnormal manganese levels early allows for timely treatment or lifestyle changes to prevent long-term damage. For example, high levels may prompt further investigation into exposure sources or liver function, while low levels might suggest nutritional deficiencies or absorption issues that need addressing.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE MANGANESE BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

A manganese blood test may be right for you if you're experiencing unexplained neurological symptoms such as tremors, difficulty walking, memory problems, or fatigue, especially if other common causes have been ruled out.

It's also appropriate if you have a history of liver disease, poor nutrition, or potential exposure to manganese through work (like welding) or environmental sources.

You might consider the test if there's concern about heavy metal toxicity or issues with how your body absorbs or clears minerals.

It’s not a routine test, but in the right context, it can provide important clues to help diagnose or rule out certain conditions.
