Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Ab) - description and reference ranges

What is it?

Thyroid peroxidase is a protein produced by your thyroid gland. Thyroid peroxidase is essential in the healthy operation of your thyroid, so this biomarker checks the presense of Thyroid peroxidase antibodies.

If these are present, it may mean, similar to Thyroglobulin antibodies (TGA) that there is an issue with your thyroid, such as an autoimmune disorder.

In autoimmune disorders (Graves′ or Hashimoto′s conditions), the immune system makes antibodies that attack your own, normal tissue by mistake. This can cause swelling in the thyroid gland and reduced function of the thyroid.

    WHAT DISEASES CAUSE LOW FERRITIN?

Low ferritin levels are a common finding on blood tests and often raise questions about iron stores and overall health. Ferritin reflects how much iron your body has stored, and when levels are low, it can point to underlying medical conditions rather than diet alone.

WHAT DOES FERRITIN LEVEL TELL YOU?

Ferritin levels offer valuable insight into how much iron your body has stored and how well it can meet its ongoing needs. While iron is often discussed in relation to anaemia, ferritin goes a step further by showing whether iron reserves are low, adequate, or elevated. Because symptoms linked to iron imbalance can be vague and develop gradually, ferritin testing is often used to investigate unexplained fatigue, weakness, or changes in physical performance.

WHAT ARE 5 SIGNS YOUR BLOOD SUGAR IS TOO HIGH?

High blood sugar, also known as hyperglycaemia, can develop gradually and may go unnoticed for some time. In the early stages, symptoms are often subtle and easily mistaken for everyday fatigue, dehydration, or stress. Because of this, many people do not realise their blood sugar is elevated until levels remain high for a prolonged period or complications begin to develop.
