DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS
Testosterone is produced in the testes in men and is traditionally considered to be the ‘male’ sex hormone. Whilst it is produced in much higher quantities in men, women also produce testosterone in the ovaries and normal testosterone levels are important for both men and women.
Testosterone is necessary to maintain mood, muscle mass, energy levels, libido and sexual function. It is also important for fertility in men. Lacking testosterone can lead to vague but pervasive symptoms, such as low mood and fatigue.
More marked symptoms can include loss of muscle mass, loss of body hair, erectile dysfunction, changes in sleep, and the development of breast tissue in men.
Although testosterone levels do decline gradually with age, sharp declines in testosterone levels can occur due to a number of medical conditions and you may be at higher risk of this happening if you have had previous illness or injuries that have affected the testes.
