Dry January: The benefits of a month without alcohol

Many of us are familiar with the scenario: there have been multiple work Christmas parties from the beginning of December, spent the days surrounding Christmas with family and friends which then leads on to New Years Eve celebrations.

The PSA Blood Test and Prostate Cancer Screening

In the UK, we screen for many different conditions. This starts before we are even born when foetuses are screened for conditions such as Down’s syndrome then, in the new born period, babies are screened for metabolic diseases and hearing problems, school children are screened for colour blindness, and in adulthood we are screened for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and bowel cancer. But we don’t screen for prostate cancer despite the existence of a simple blood test that can alert us to the possibility of the disease.

Dr Mike Forsythe on Vitamin B12

    What is Pre-Diabetes?

The idea of pre-diabetes is a relatively new concept and reflects a more pro-active approach to the identification of those at risk of diabetes and a more pro-active approach to the prevention of diabetes. Vitamin B12

Like all vitamins, B12 is a substance that our body can’t make for itself but needs in small but vital amounts that we get from our diet. Vitamin B12 is most abundant in meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. As you can see from this list, vitamin B12 can be lacking from vegetarian and vegan diets and, as these types of diet have become more popular, vitamin B12 deficiency has become more common.

Dr Mike Forsythe on Hair Loss and Its Causes

A few months ago, a male patient of mine proudly declared that he believed there to be only 3 certainties in life; death, taxes and losing one’s hair. He had made his peace with his new found baldness, but for many people hair loss can be very distressing.

Dr. Mike Forsythe on Erectile Dysfunction

There are many euphemisms for erectile dysfunction - ‘I can’t get it up, doc’, or ‘it’s stopped working down there’ - this is because the problem is both difficult to talk about and extremely common. So what exactly is Erectile Dysfunction? And perhaps...

    Understanding Cardiac Risk

The British Heart Foundation collates some very frightening statistics about heart disease. In the UK a heart attack occurs about every 5 minutes. Over seven and half million of us are living with heart or circulatory disease, causing a quarter of all deaths which equates to about a death every 3 minutes. It is a massive issue, both for individuals and for our health as a population.

Chronic Kidney Disease: What Does it Mean for Me?

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a frightening term. The idea of a chronic disease attacking your vital organs is very unsettling, but CKD is actually very common. Around 3 million people in the UK are estimated to be suffering from it and many of these people will have no idea that there is a problem.

    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Unexplained Exhaustion

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), sometimes also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), is a condition of exhaustion without an obvious medical explanation. It is diagnosed when someone is suffering from debilitating fatigue, malaise after exercise, unrefreshing sleep, and cognitive problems (commonly called ‘brain fog’), without an identifiable cause for a period longer than six weeks.
