ANTI-CARDIOLIPIN ANTIBODIES IGG AND IGM BLOOD TEST
About the test
Anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACA) IgM and IgG are used to help diagnose certain autoimmune disorders, particularly antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). These antibodies target a specific type of phospholipid called cardiolipin, which is a component of cell membranes.
Antiphospholipid syndrome increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attacks, strokes, and pregnancy complications including recurrent miscarriages. These antibodies are therefore often checked for when things occur, especially when they occur unexpectedly, repeatedly, or at an unusually young age.
It is worth noting that a positive ACA test does not necessarily confirm the presence of APS, as these antibodies can also be present in other conditions or even in healthy individuals. Therefore, additional clinical assessments and follow-up investigations are necessary for accurate diagnosis.
