Anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) IgM and IgG are used to help diagnose certain autoimmune disorders, particularly antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).

These antibodies target a specific type of phospholipid called cardiolipin, which is a component of cell membranes.

ANTICARDIOLIPIN ANTIBODIES (ACA) BLOOD TEST

Antiphospholipid syndrome increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attacks, strokes, and pregnancy complications including recurrent miscarriages. These antibodies are therefore often checked for when things occur, especially when they occur unexpectedly, repeatedly, or at an unusually young age.

It is worth noting that a positive ACA test does not necessarily confirm the presence of APS, as these antibodies can also be present in other conditions or even in healthy individuals. Therefore, additional clinical assessments and follow-up investigations are necessary for accurate diagnosis.

Does a positive result mean I have antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)?

Not necessarily. A single positive result may be temporary, especially if related to an infection or medication. To confirm a diagnosis of APS, the test usually needs to be positive on two separate occasions at least 12 weeks apart, and accompanied by clinical symptoms such as clotting events or pregnancy loss.
