About the Testosterone Blood Test

The Testosterone Blood Test offers a comprehensive analysis of the overall testosterone levels present in your bloodstream. This essential hormone is closely linked to key aspects of overall health, playing a central role in driving libido, ensuring fertility, influencing mood, and bolstering the maintenance of muscle strength and bone density.

For many men, a dip in testosterone can be the hidden culprit behind a range of symptoms. It is not uncommon for diminished testosterone levels to lead to a reduced sex drive, feelings of constant fatigue, mood disturbances, erectile difficulties, or a noticeable decrease in muscle mass. Couples facing challenges in conceiving might find the results of this test particularly enlightening.

For women, an anomaly in testosterone levels, especially when elevated, can be indicative of conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Taking this test can offer clarity and direction for appropriate medical interventions.

Testosterone is essential for libido, fertility, mood, muscle strength, and bone health in both men and women. Our test provides clarity into your testosterone levels and the role this key hormone plays in your overall well-being.

Gain actionable insights through rapid, reliable results from our CQC-regulated lab. Experience convenience and discretion with our easy home test kits. Monitor changes over time via our Health Dashboard and save on ongoing testing through subscription discounts.

Whether you are a man struggling with low energy or intimacy challenges, or a woman seeking to better understand conditions like PCOS, our Testosterone Blood Test is a vital step. Take control of your health and unlock the power of testosterone testing today.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Testosterone is produced in the testes in men and is traditionally considered to be the "male" sex hormone. Whilst it is produced in much higher quantities in men, women also produce testosterone in the ovaries and normal testosterone levels are important for both men and women.

Testosterone is necessary to maintain mood, muscle mass, energy levels, libido and sexual function. It is also important for fertility in men. Lacking testosterone can lead to vague but pervasive symptoms, such as low mood and fatigue.

More marked symptoms can include loss of muscle mass, loss of body hair, erectile dysfunction, changes in sleep, and the development of breast tissue in men.

Although testosterone levels do decline gradually with age, sharp declines in testosterone levels can occur due to a number of medical conditions and you may be at higher risk of this happening if you have had previous illness or injuries that have affected the testes.

Red flag symptoms for the Testosterone Blood Test

If your blood tests come back normal but you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it is essential to consult a doctor. These could be indicative of a more serious underlying condition:

  • Increasing muscle weakness.
  • Unaccounted for weight loss.
  • Worsening symptoms of any nature.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Testosterone Blood Test.
  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE TESTOSTERONE BLOOD TEST.

The testosterone test should be taken in the morning, between 7am and 10am.

If you take biotin supplements, stop taking them 72 hours before the test.

If you are using gel testosterone replacement therapy, do not take the finger prick test from the hand you use to apply the gel.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Testosterone Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

Why does the test have to be taken in the morning?

Like most hormones, levels of testosterone fluctuate throughout the day in a cyclical pattern. Levels are highest in the morning, so this is when we recommend that you take the test. Taking it later in the day may give the false impression of low levels.

Can I take this test if I am using Testosterone Replacement Therapy?

Yes, it is a good way to monitor your response to treatment and help to establish the right dose of replacement for you.

If you are interested in a bigger picture, have a look at our Ultimate TRT Blood Test.

Is the testosterone test useful for women?

It is useful to measure testosterone levels in women who have symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) in whom testosterone levels may be raised.

There is also increasing interest in the role that testosterone replacement should play in HRT for post-menopausal women as low levels of testosterone in women can contribute to reduced sex drive and vaginal dryness.

What time of the day should I do a testosterone blood test?

The best time to do a testosterone blood test is in the morning, typically between 7 AM and 10 AM. This is because testosterone levels are highest in the early morning and gradually decline throughout the day. Testing during this time ensures the most useful and consistent result.

Our clinics generally open at 08:00, so it's best if you choose around that time to book yourself in. Or if you are doing a home kit - do it as early as you can.

What can cause low testosterone in men?

Low testosterone in men can be caused by various factors, including:

  1. Aging: Testosterone levels naturally decline with age.
  2. Medical conditions: Hypogonadism, obesity, diabetes, and chronic illnesses can affect hormone production.
  3. Medications: Certain drugs, like opioids and steroids, can lower testosterone levels.
  4. Injury or infection: Damage to the testicles or infections affecting the testicles can impair testosterone production.
  5. Lifestyle factors: Poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, and stress can contribute to low testosterone.

How much can testosterone levels fluctuate?

Testosterone levels can fluctuate significantly throughout the day. Typically, levels are highest in the morning and decrease by about 25-50% by the evening.

Factors such as age, health status, stress, sleep patterns, and physical activity can influence these fluctuations.

Chronic conditions, medications, and lifestyle choices can also contribute to variations in testosterone levels.

For accurate assessment, it's recommended to measure testosterone levels in the morning, when they are at their peak.

Is there such a thing as male menopause?

Yes, there is a condition often referred to as "male menopause" or "andropause," though it's not identical to female menopause.

Male menopause describes age-related changes in male hormone levels, particularly a gradual decline in testosterone. Symptoms can include fatigue, depression, irritability, reduced libido, and erectile dysfunction.

Unlike female menopause, which involves a clear-cut cessation of ovulation and hormone production, male menopause occurs more gradually and varies widely among individuals. It's also influenced by lifestyle, health, and psychological factors.

How can I increase testosterone levels naturally?

It is entirely feasible to naturally increase testosterone levels. What you need to do is:

  1. Exercise Regularly: Engage in strength training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
  2. Eat a Balanced Diet: Focus on protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates to support hormone production.
  3. Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
  4. Reduce Stress: Practice relaxation techniques like meditation or yoga to lower cortisol levels.
  5. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity can negatively impact testosterone levels.
  6. Limit Alcohol: Excessive drinking can reduce testosterone.
  7. Take Supplements: Consider vitamin D and zinc, which may help support testosterone levels.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE TESTOSTERONE BLOOD TEST?

You want to find out if low testosterone levels are contributing to symptoms of low mood, low libido or loss of muscle mass.

To monitor your response to testosterone replacement therapy.

To see if your testosterone levels are in the normal range.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE TESTOSTERONE BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

For men, the testosterone blood test may help explain symptoms such as low libido, low energy levels, low mood, erectile dysfunction, or loss of muscle mass. You may also want to take the test if you and your partner are struggling to conceive.

In women, high testosterone levels may be associated with the condition of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
