About the test

A lipase blood test is a measure the level of lipase enzyme in the blood. Lipase is an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach. It plays a crucial role in the digestion of fats in the diet by breaking them down into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body.

The test is often ordered as part of the evaluation for pancreatic disorders, particularly acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the pancreas, which can lead to the leakage of lipase and other enzymes into the bloodstream.

Elevated levels of lipase in the blood can indicate several conditions, including acute or chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic pseudocyst, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder inflammation, and other disorders affecting the pancreas or bile ducts. However, it is important to note that elevated lipase levels can also be caused by factors unrelated to the pancreas, such as kidney disease, certain medications, and gastrointestinal conditions.

Conversely, low levels of lipase are less common but may be seen in conditions that affect the pancreas, such as chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis.

This test is normally performed together with another pancreas biomarker - the Amylase Blood Test.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Lipase is one of the enzymes produced by the pancreas, and its measurement in the blood is commonly used as a marker to assess pancreatic function, particularly in the context of pancreatic diseases and disorders.

However, while lipase is a valuable indicator, it is not the only method used to assess pancreatic function comprehensively, you should consult your GP for the overall evaluation, as other enzymes such as lipase, as well as other investigations may be required.

Red flag symptoms for the Pancreas Lipase Blood Test

Even if your blood tests are normal, you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms below because they may be a sign of serious underlying illness.

  • Sudden and severe abdominal pain, usually in the upper abdomen or mid-back.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Persistent or recurring abdominal pain, which may be dull or gnawing.

  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE PANCREAS LIPASE BLOOD TEST.

Please fast for 12 hours prior to the blood sample. Take any medication that you are on as you would normally.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Pancreas Lipase Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What does it mean if my lipase levels are elevated?

If your lipase levels are elevated, it could indicate various conditions, with the most common one being acute pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that leads to the release of pancreatic enzymes, including lipase, into the bloodstream. Other possible causes of elevated lipase levels include chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder inflammation, pancreatic pseudocyst, and certain gastrointestinal disorders. However, it's important to remember that elevated lipase levels can also be caused by factors unrelated to the pancreas.

Do I need to fast before taking a lipase blood test?

Yes, fasting is typically required before taking a lipase blood test. Fasting helps obtain accurate baseline measurements of lipase levels. It is recommended to fast for about 8 to 12 hours before the test, which means avoiding eating or drinking anything except water during that time. Fasting ensures that recent food intake does not affect the lipase levels, as eating can cause temporary fluctuations in enzyme levels that may not reflect the true state of the pancreas. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider for fasting and any other preparations before the lipase test to ensure reliable results.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE PANCREAS LIPASE BLOOD TEST?

The pancreas is an essential organ in the human body due to its critical roles in both the digestive and endocrine systems.

Digestive Function: The pancreas produces digestive enzymes that play a crucial role in breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the food we eat. These enzymes are released into the small intestine, where they aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Production of Insulin and Glucagon: The pancreas contains clusters of cells called islets of Langerhans, which are responsible for producing hormones like insulin and glucagon. These hormones are vital for regulating blood sugar levels. Insulin helps lower blood sugar levels by allowing cells to absorb glucose for energy, while glucagon raises blood sugar levels by promoting the release of stored glucose from the liver.

Blood Sugar Regulation: The proper functioning of insulin and glucagon is crucial for maintaining stable blood sugar levels. Proper blood sugar regulation is essential for overall health, as imbalances can lead to conditions such as diabetes.

Exocrine Function: The pancreas has an exocrine function, where it produces and releases digestive enzymes into the digestive tract to help with the breakdown of food.

Enzyme Regulation: The pancreas not only produces digestive enzymes but also helps regulate other digestive enzymes produced by the small intestine. This coordination is crucial for efficient digestion and nutrient absorption.

Metabolism Regulation: Hormones produced by the pancreas, such as insulin, play a vital role in regulating metabolism. Metabolism refers to the process by which the body converts food into energy for various cellular functions.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE PANCREAS LIPASE BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Monitoring the pancreas is essential for several reasons, as the pancreas plays a crucial role in the digestive and endocrine systems.

Early Detection of Pancreatic Disorders: The pancreas is susceptible to various diseases, such as acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic pseudocyst, and cystic fibrosis. Regular monitoring can help detect these conditions early, which can lead to more effective treatment and improved outcomes.

Assessing Pancreatic Function: Monitoring the pancreas can help assess its overall function, especially in individuals with a history of pancreatic diseases or those at risk for pancreatic disorders. Evaluating pancreatic enzyme levels, such as lipase, can provide valuable insights into how well the pancreas is performing its role in digesting fats and proteins.

Evaluating Nutritional Absorption: The pancreas plays a key role in producing enzymes needed for the absorption of nutrients. Monitoring pancreatic function can help identify malabsorption issues that may arise due to pancreatic diseases.

Guiding Lifestyle and Dietary Choices: Individuals with pancreatic disorders or at risk for such conditions may benefit from lifestyle and dietary modifications. Regular monitoring can help guide these individuals in making informed choices to support their pancreatic health.
