About the test
In this blood test we measure the level of amylase, an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands, in the bloodstream.
Amylase plays a crucial role in the digestive process by breaking down complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars that can be easily absorbed by the body. The test is useful when there is a suspicion of pancreatic disorders or other conditions affecting the digestive system.
It will help to assess the functioning of the pancreas, particularly in diagnosing conditions such as acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, or other pancreatic diseases. Elevated levels of amylase in the blood can indicate inflammation or damage to the pancreas, which releases more of the enzyme into the bloodstream when it is injured or inflamed. However, it is important to note that elevated amylase levels can also be associated with other conditions, such as gallbladder disease or mumps, as well as ulcers.
The amylase test is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests that we offer, such as lipase test, to provide a more comprehensive view of pancreatic health.
