About the test

In this blood test we measure the level of amylase, an enzyme produced primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands, in the bloodstream.

Amylase plays a crucial role in the digestive process by breaking down complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars that can be easily absorbed by the body. The test is useful when there is a suspicion of pancreatic disorders or other conditions affecting the digestive system.

It will help to assess the functioning of the pancreas, particularly in diagnosing conditions such as acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, or other pancreatic diseases. Elevated levels of amylase in the blood can indicate inflammation or damage to the pancreas, which releases more of the enzyme into the bloodstream when it is injured or inflamed. However, it is important to note that elevated amylase levels can also be associated with other conditions, such as gallbladder disease or mumps, as well as ulcers.

The amylase test is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests that we offer, such as lipase test, to provide a more comprehensive view of pancreatic health.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Amylase is an enzyme that helps break down complex carbohydrates, like starch, into simpler sugars that your body can easily absorb and use for energy.

There are different types of amylase, with the main ones produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. This enzyme is essential for digesting the carbohydrates you eat.

When something goes wrong with your pancreas, the levels of amylase in your blood can change, which is why doctors often measure it to diagnose and monitor certain health conditions.

Home test kit for Amylase Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What does an elevated amylase level indicate?

Elevated amylase levels in the blood can indicate a problem with the pancreas, such as pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. It can also be a sign of other conditions like gallbladder disease, a blocked bile duct, or even certain infections like mumps. However, elevated levels don't always point to a serious issue, so it's important to discuss the results with your doctor.

How is the amylase test performed?

This test usually takes around 4 days to complete from sample arrival in the lab.

Can low amylase levels be a cause for concern?

Yes, low amylase levels can sometimes be a cause for concern. While it's less common than elevated levels, low amylase can indicate conditions such as chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, or liver disease.

It's important to follow up any results outside of the reference range with your GP.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE AMYLASE BLOOD TEST?

The amylase blood test is not only vital for diagnosing pancreatic disorders but also for monitoring the progression of these conditions and the effectiveness of treatments.

It helps in detecting complications or changes in the state of diseases such as pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or even certain infections.

Because elevated amylase levels can be a sign of various health issues, the test is often used alongside other diagnostic tests to provide a comprehensive understanding of health, making it a critical component in the management of digestive and pancreatic disorders.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE AMYLASE BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you are experiencing symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss, your doctor may recommend an amylase test to investigate potential issues with your pancreas or digestive system.

The test is particularly useful in diagnosing acute pancreatitis, a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed and causes sudden, severe pain.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, please contact your GP or emergency services immediately.

It can also help identify other conditions like chronic pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or infections like mumps, which can cause elevated amylase levels.
