About the Tired All The Time Blood Test

Feeling tired all the time is a widespread concern, often as a result of our busy and stressful lives. However, persistent fatigue might also indicate various medical conditions. The Tired All The Time Blood Test is designed to explore these potential causes, helping you either rule them out or identify them for appropriate treatment.

This comprehensive screen examines a wide array of biomarkers due to the numerous possible sources of fatigue. We start with a full blood count to check for anaemia or other blood disorders. An inflammatory marker, CRP, is tested to look for signs of infection or autoimmune disorders. We also assess the health of your liver and kidneys, as issues with these organs can also manifest as fatigue.

The test measures your sugar levels to check for diabetes, another common and significant cause of tiredness. Lastly, we examine crucial micronutrients like vitamin B12, folate, and ferritin (an indicator of iron levels). Deficiencies in these nutrients are common and can be easily addressed; low levels are often linked to feelings of exhaustion.

Doctor's notes

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Tiredness is often attributed to our fast-paced, stressful lives, but it can also be a sign of various medical conditions. The Tired All The Time Blood Test is designed to identify or exclude these conditions as sources of your fatigue, guiding you towards effective treatment options.

We evaluate your full blood count to rule out anaemia and other blood disorders, and the CRP marker to check for infections or autoimmune disorders. Thyroid function tests are conducted, as an underactive thyroid frequently leads to fatigue. Additionally, we assess liver and kidney health, as issues with these organs can contribute to tiredness.

Your fasting glucose levels are tested to exclude diabetes, another prevalent cause of fatigue. The test also measures crucial micronutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, and ferritin, which indicate iron levels. Deficiencies in these nutrients are common and can be readily treated; they often result in significant exhaustion. This extensive testing approach ensures a thorough assessment, helping you address the root cause of your fatigue.

Take this test after any symptoms of short-term illness have settled.

This is a fasting test therefore, you must not eat and only drink water from 10 pm the night before you take the test.

If you are taking biotin supplements, stop these for 72 hours before the test.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Tired All The Time Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

If I forget to fast, is the test still valid?

Most of the tests on this screen do not require you to fast. We interpret the blood glucose level on the assumption that you have fasted, so if you forget then it may lead us to believe there is a problem when there isn’t. A ‘random’ glucose (i.e. taken when you haven’t fasted) can still be useful, a normal result is reassuring but a high result should prompt further investigations.

How does this test exclude autoimmune conditions?

We check CRP, a marker of inflammation often raised in autoimmune conditions. The screen also checks for the result of various autoimmune conditions such as abnormal thyroid hormone levels, abnormal liver or kidney tests, or high blood sugar levels.

Will this tell me if the menopause may be causing my tiredness?

No, we don’t test the female hormones in this test. You may be interested in the Female Hormone Blood Test which will give you that information.

Why take this test?

Hi, I am Dr. Marco Esposito and here is why it's important to take this test.
  • You want a thorough health check.
  • You feel exhausted and want to know why.
  • You are worried about a family history of thyroid problems, diabetes, liver or kidney disease.

Is this test right for you?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
