DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

DR. ADAM STATEN - GP VIEW AND RED FLAG SYMPTOMS

While biotin deficiency is relatively rare, excessive intake from supplements can interfere with certain laboratory tests, leading to incorrect diagnoses.

For example, high biotin levels can affect tests for thyroid function, hormone levels, and cardiac biomarkers.

Monitoring biotin levels ensures that supplementation is necessary and maintained at a safe level.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Vitamin B7 (Biotin) Blood Test.

Who should be concerned about biotin deficiency?

Biotin deficiency is relatively rare, but certain groups are at higher risk. These include individuals with genetic disorders like biotinidase deficiency, those on long-term parenteral nutrition, people taking certain anticonvulsant medications, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic alcohol use.

These groups may benefit from regular monitoring of biotin levels to prevent deficiency.

What symptoms might indicate a biotin deficiency?

Signs of biotin deficiency can include hair loss, skin rashes (especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth), brittle nails, fatigue, depression, neurological symptoms (such as numbness and tingling in the extremities), and conjunctivitis.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's advisable to consult a healthcare provider and consider testing for biotin levels.

How does biotin supplementation interfere with lab tests?

Yes, high levels of biotin from supplements can interfere with various lab tests, including those measuring thyroid hormones, troponin (a cardiac marker), and other hormones. This interference can lead to false results, potentially causing misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment.

If you are taking biotin supplements, inform your healthcare provider before undergoing lab tests.
