What is a blood test for urea?

A urea blood test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood. Urea nitrogen is a waste product that forms when your body breaks down protein. A blood test can reveal important information about how well your kidneys are working, so if your urea blood test results are off the normal range, this could mean that either your kidneys or your liver may not be working properly.

THIS IS NOT A GUARANTEED TURNAROUND TIME.

We are extremely proud of our very short turnaround times and a very efficient laboratory processes, you will start receiving results as soon as they are available and have completed clinical validation.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Urea is produced by your liver and is a waste product of proteins being broken down. As with most body waste, it is cleared from your blood by the kidneys. Therefore, we can use this measurement as a measurement of your kidney function.

Reference ranges

If your indicative urea level is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

Low urea levels are rare and usually not a concern on their own. They may be present in cases of malnutrition or severe liver disease, but additional symptoms would typically be evident. Low urea levels are also common during normal pregnancy.

If you are concerned or are experiencing symptoms, you should discuss these results with your GP.

If your indicative urea level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

It may be a sign of a very high protein diet or dehydration at the time of the test (which is why we recommend plenty of water before taking the blood sample!)

It can also mean a sign of kidney disease and should be investigated further.

Please discuss this result with your GP.

Red flag symptoms for the Urea Blood Test

Even if the blood test is normal, you should still see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms below.

  • Swollen around the ankles, eyes or abdomen
  • Lower than expected urine output
  • Passing a lot more urine than normal
  • In men; symptoms of difficulty passing urine, getting up more than usual at night to pass urine, or being unable to fully empty your bladder

  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE UREA BLOOD TEST.

There are no special instructions for this test, just make sure you are well-hydrated before taking it.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Urea Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What is a urea blood test normal range?

Results of the blood urea nitrogen test are measured in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). In general, around 7 to 20 mg/dL (2.5 to 7.1 mmol/L) is considered normal. However, normal ranges may vary depending on the reference range used by the lab and your age.

What causes high urea levels?

High blood urea nitrogen levels can be caused by a number of factors such as urinary tract obstruction, congestive heart failure or recent heart attack, gastrointestinal bleeding, dehydration, or shock.

Does this test identify which kidney is affected?

This test cannot pinpoint which kidney has an issue. In some cases, one kidney can compensate for a problem with the other kidney. For instance, individuals who have donated a kidney can still maintain healthy kidney function as the remaining kidney can compensate for the loss.
