About the EBV - Glandular Fever detection blood test

This test analyses your blood sample for the Epstein-Barr (EBV) virus antibodies, to help diagnose a past, recent or current EBV infection.

Epstein-Barr virus is one of the most common viruses in the world, and it is known to cause infectious mononucleosis, also known as mono or glandular fever.

Most people are infected with EBV at some point in their lives, often during childhood or adolescence. In many cases, the infection goes unnoticed or causes only mild symptoms. However, when the virus does cause symptoms, they can include fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.

3 Biomarkers

  1. EBV ANTIBODIES

    - EBNA IgG Antibodies
    - Epstein - Barr Virus Capsid Antigen IgM
    - Epstein - Barr Virus Capsid Antigen IgG

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Glandular fever, or infectious mononucleosis, is primarily caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). While other viruses, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), can also lead to similar symptoms, EBV is the most common and well-known culprit.

Glandular fever typically presents with a range of symptoms, including fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes (especially in the neck and armpits), fatigue, and sometimes an enlarged spleen and liver. These symptoms can be quite severe and last for several weeks.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Epstine-Barr Virus Screen (EBV) Blood Test.
  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE EPSTINE-BARR VIRUS SCREEN (EBV) BLOOD TEST.

Drink plenty of water before having this test, so that you are well hydrated for the appointment.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Epstine-Barr Virus Screen (EBV) Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

How is EBV passed onto other people?

Glandular fever is typically spread through the exchange of saliva, which can happen through activities like kissing, sharing eating utensils, or close contact with an infected person. EBV can also be found in other bodily fluids like blood and genital secretions.

How long does EBV or glandular fever take to clear up?

Most people recover from glandular fever over time with rest and supportive care. However, the recovery period can vary from person to person, and some individuals may experience lingering fatigue for weeks (or even months!) after the acute symptoms have resolved.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE EPSTINE-BARR VIRUS SCREEN (EBV) BLOOD TEST?
