CYSTATIN C BLOOD TEST
About the test
Cystatin C is a small protein produced by all nucleated cells in the body and is considered an important biomarker for kidney function. Unlike creatinine, which is affected by muscle mass, diet, and age, cystatin C levels are relatively stable and less influenced by these factors, making it a more reliable indicator of glomerular filtration rate (GFR).
Since cystatin C is filtered through the kidneys and not reabsorbed or secreted by renal tubules, its serum concentration directly reflects how well the kidneys are filtering blood. This makes it particularly useful for detecting early kidney dysfunction, especially in cases where creatinine-based estimates of GFR may be misleading.
In addition to its role in assessing kidney function, cystatin C has been linked to cardiovascular health. Elevated cystatin C levels have been associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events and mortality, even in individuals without diagnosed chronic kidney disease (CKD).
This suggests that cystatin C may serve as a broader marker of overall health, signaling both renal and cardiovascular issues. As research progresses, cystatin C is increasingly seen as a versatile and sensitive biomarker, offering valuable insights into both kidney function and long-term cardiovascular risk.
