About the test
Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)
CEA is a protein that may be produced by some cancer cells. It is most commonly used to monitor the response to treatment in bowel cancer but may also be raised in other cancers such as lung, pancreatic, breast, liver or ovarian cancer.
It can also be raised in non-cancerous conditions such as liver disease or inflammatory bowel disease. It is sometimes used to help detect recurrence of cancer in people who have previously undergone treatment for cancer. It is not used as a screening test for cancer.
