About the AST blood test

What is an AST blood test?

The Aspartate AminoTransferase (AST) blood test is a vital tool for assessing liver and heart health. This test measures the level of AST, an enzyme abundant in these organs, in your bloodstream. Elevated AST levels can indicate potential organ damage or disease. A simple blood draw delivers valuable insights, often indicating the need for further investigation or intervention to safeguard your health.

If you experience symptoms such as fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or jaundice, or if you are on medication affecting the liver, an AST test could be a crucial step towards understanding and managing your health.

1 Biomarker

  2. UPGRADE

Need more biomarkers? Check out our Liver Function Blood Test

Most of the biomarkers we offer in the "ready made" panels are also available separately. So if your favourite test panel is missing a biomarker you would like to have, no problem, you can add whatever you need to one of our standard panels using the "Pick-n-mix" options, such as this one.

  1. TURNAROUND TIME

For most biomarkers our usual turnaround time is 24-48 hours, or less, from the time your sample is in our lab. We do not wait for all the results to complete before sending them to you, so you may start receiving results the same day for most cases, or as results become available.

We are extremely proud of our very short turnaround times and a very efficient laboratory processes. Whilst we accommodate the shortest of time scales, with some results available within hours, for this particular test the usual turnaround time is:

    1-2 days

Doctor's notes

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

The Aspartate AminoTransferase (AST) Blood Test is a comprehensive diagnostic tool designed to evaluate the level of AST enzyme in the bloodstream. AST, a crucial enzyme found in various tissues, is predominantly present in the liver and heart cells.

However, it also exists in lower concentrations in muscles and kidneys. When these cells undergo damage or destruction, AST is released into the bloodstream, leading to elevated levels. Thus, an AST Blood Test can provide crucial insights into liver or heart damage.

By interpreting the AST levels in your blood, healthcare professionals can diagnose various medical conditions such as hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and myocardial infarction.

Additionally, the AST blood test is often used in conjunction with other tests such as the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) blood test for a more comprehensive evaluation of liver health.

Red flag symptoms for the Aspartate AminoTransferase (AST) Blood Test

Even if the blood test is normal, you should still see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms below.

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Abdominal pain or swelling
  • Unexplained fatigue or weakness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dark urine
  • Pale stool

Special instructions

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Aspartate AminoTransferase (AST) Blood Test.

No special preparations are required. The AST blood test can be taken any time of day without fasting or dietary restrictions.

However, you should avoid:

  • Strenuous exercise 24 hours before the test, as this can temporarily raise AST levels
  • Alcohol, as consuming alcohol can cause AST levels to increase for up to 1-2 days afterwards.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Aspartate AminoTransferase (AST) Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

What do AST blood results mean?

Reference ranges

If your indicative AST level is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

Low levels of AST are not particularly common. It may imply low levels of zinc in the body or general malnutrition, some types of anaemia or thyroid disease

Please discuss this result with your GP.

If your indicative AST level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

High levels (8-10 times the reference range) are generally due to hepatitis (acute). This can be caused by a virus. In acute hepatitis, the AST levels can be high for up to 6 months, before returning to normal.

Moderately high levels, 3-5 times the upper limit of the reference range, usually mean chronic conditions of liver disease, or chronic hepatitis. Several times the level of AST can be due to chronic alcohol abuse or cholestasis and heart, kidney or skeletal muscle damage.

AST tends to go up and down for chronic conditions, so it is worth measuring this value at set times, for continuity.

Please discuss this result with your GP.

What causes high AST levels?

Normal AST levels generally range from 10 to 40 units per litre of blood. Higher levels often indicate liver damage.

Are AST and ALT the same thing?

No. ALT specifically indicates liver health, while AST can also reflect damage to heart and muscle tissues. But they are both enzymes measured to assess liver function.

Why take this test?

Hi, I am Dr. Marco Esposito and here is why it's important to take this test.

An AST blood test is often used to detect and monitor liver disease or damage, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. It is also used to evaluate the severity of heart conditions like heart attacks. The test can be helpful if you are experiencing symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, or abdominal pain.

Is this test right for you?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.

Are you experiencing unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or jaundice? These are some of the symptoms related to liver diseases that an AST blood test can help investigate. If you are already diagnosed with a liver or heart condition, an AST blood test is a crucial tool for monitoring the health of these organs.

This test is also a valuable resource for individuals who consume alcohol regularly or are on medication that may potentially harm the liver. Regular AST blood testing can be a proactive step in maintaining your health and detecting issues early. Do not leave your health to chance - keep track of what is happening inside your body.
