About the test

CA 125 is a biomarker that plays a role in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain medical conditions, particularly ovarian cancer. The CA 125 biomarker refers to a protein known as cancer antigen 125, which is found in elevated levels in the blood of some individuals with ovarian cancer.

Elevated levels of CA 125 can indicate the presence of ovarian cancer, but it is important to note that other non-cancerous conditions, such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids, can also lead to increased CA 125 levels.

A raised CA 125 does not necessarily mean that you have ovarian cancer, but it should definitely prompt further investigation to rule this out. Like all tests, CA 125 is not perfect. Whilst a negative result is reassuring, you should still see your doctor if you have symptoms of abdominal bloating, pelvic pain or discomfort, unexplained weight loss, changes in your urine or bowel habits, or unexpected vaginal bleeding after the menopause.

CA 125 testing involves a blood test that measures the concentration of this protein in the bloodstream. It is commonly used as a tool to aid in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, especially in cases where symptoms or imaging findings suggest the possibility of this disease. Elevated levels of CA 125 can indicate the presence of ovarian cancer, but it is important to note that other non-cancerous conditions, such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids, can also lead to increased CA 125 levels.

In addition to its diagnostic utility, CA 125 is also used for monitoring the response to treatment and assessing disease progression in individuals with ovarian cancer. A decline in CA 125 levels over time can indicate a positive response to therapy, while a rise in CA 125 levels may suggest recurrence or progression of the disease. Serial monitoring of CA 125 levels allows healthcare professionals to make informed decisions regarding treatment adjustments and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
