About the Advanced Diabetes Blood Test

Diabetes has emerged as a global health crisis, with rising incidences largely attributed to unhealthy dietary habits and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. In response to this growing concern, our Advanced Diabetes Blood Test expands upon the standard HbA1c test by also measuring fasting glucose levels, providing a more comprehensive analysis of your blood sugar control.

Diabetes doesn't just affect your day-to-day feeling of wellness; it can have severe long-term consequences. Elevated blood sugar levels can cause significant damage to vital body parts, including the nerves in your hands and feet, as well as your kidneys and eyes. It also greatly increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, which can have life-threatening implications.

This test is designed not only to diagnose diabetes but also to identify early-stage blood sugar processing issues, such as prediabetes or impaired fasting glucose. Early detection through this test allows for timely intervention, which can mitigate the risk of progression to full-blown diabetes and help maintain better overall health.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Early detection of blood sugar irregularities is crucial as it enables the implementation of lifestyle changes and the initiation of appropriate medical treatment that can prevent a range of serious complications that are both life-impairing and life-shortening. Detecting these issues at an early stage, such as during the prediabetes phase, is even more beneficial. Recognising prediabetes allows for the opportunity to make life-saving adjustments in your daily habits and health routines before full-blown diabetes develops.

Our Advanced Diabetes Blood Test is specifically designed to identify these early indicators of blood sugar metabolism issues. By catching these signs early, you have the crucial opportunity to take proactive steps toward managing your health effectively. This not only helps in preventing the progression of diabetes but also supports overall long-term wellness and vitality.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Advanced Diabetes Blood Test.
  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE ADVANCED DIABETES BLOOD TEST.

This is best done as a fasting test so have nothing to eat and only drink water from 10 pm the night before you take the test.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Advanced Diabetes Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

If I forget to fast, is the test still valid?

If you forget to fast before taking the test, the results may not be accurate. We analyse the fasting glucose levels with the expectation that you have not eaten, so not fasting could lead to an incorrect assumption of a health issue when none exists. Fasting is crucial as it helps identify 'impaired fasting glucose,' where blood sugar levels are high despite fasting—this is an indicator of a high risk of developing diabetes. While a glucose test taken without fasting (a 'random' glucose test) can still provide useful information, a high result in this context should prompt further investigation to ensure accuracy and proper health assessment.

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c, also known as glycated haemoglobin, is a measure of how much of the haemoglobin in your red blood cells is bound to glucose. Because the life of a red blood cell is about 3 to 4 months, the proportion of haemoglobin that is bound to glucose tells us what your average blood sugar levels have been during that period. It can be used to diagnose diabetes but is also very useful for monitoring the disease over time and assessing your response to treatment.

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes occurs when your blood sugar levels are elevated above normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. This condition indicates that the biological processes leading to diabetes are already underway, placing you at a significant risk of developing diabetes in the future. Identifying prediabetes provides a critical opportunity to implement immediate lifestyle adjustments, helping you prevent the full onset of diabetes and maintain better long-term health.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

In its early stages, diabetes may cause no symptoms but common symptoms are tiredness and malaise, feeling thirsty all the time, passing lots of urine, and blurred vision.
