Experiencing abdominal pain and discomfort can be distressing and impact your quality of life. The Abdominal Pain Blood Test suite is meticulously designed to assist individuals experiencing symptoms like persistent diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, and bloating. Offering swift and accurate results from our CQC-certified laboratory, this test encompasses a thorough biomarker analysis tailored to identify potential causes behind abdominal discomfort. With the added benefit of home testing, we deliver the essential insights you require, combining speed and precision to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of your digestive health.

About the Abdominal Pain Blood Test

The Abdominal Pain Blood Test provides a comprehensive overview of your health, starting with a full blood count (FBC). This test is instrumental in detecting or excluding anaemia as well as offering insights into immune system health. FBC abnormalities may signal abdominal conditions like coeliac disease or pernicious anaemia, affecting nutrient absorption, or indicate internal bleeding from gastritis, ulcers, or serious concerns like bowel cancer. We also check iron, vitamin B12, and folate levels, low levels of which might underly abnormalities in the FBC.

Kidney function tests are essential, given the kidneys' role in waste filtration, electrolyte balance, and blood pressure regulation. Symptoms such as nausea or loss of appetite can hint at kidney disease, highlighting the test's relevance in diagnosing abdominal issues.

Liver health is gauged through enzyme levels, reflecting its critical functions in digestion, waste processing, and more. Elevated enzyme levels can suggest liver or gallbladder issues, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain, swelling, and changes in urine and stool colour.

C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a marker of inflammation, aid in identifying infections or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These autoimmune conditions can cause significant abdominal discomfort, bloody stools, and diarrhoea, underscoring the test's comprehensive approach to diagnosing abdominal pain sources.

We routinly report these markers in venous samples.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

The Abdominal Symptoms Test is specifically tailored for individuals experiencing frequent diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort, and bloating. It aims to delve into symptoms often associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a condition characterised by common yet distressing signs like diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, and crampy abdominal pains.

Given that there's no definitive test for IBS, this comprehensive test is designed to rule out other possible causes of these symptoms, including ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and liver or kidney disease, ensuring a thorough evaluation and aiding in the accurate identification of the underlying issue.

Red flag symptoms for the Abdominal Pain Blood Test

Even if your blood tests are normal, you should see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms below because they may be a sign of serious underlying illness.

  • Bleeding when you open your bowels
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Progressively worsening abdominal pain
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

Hi, I am Stefania Brown, I am the Laboratory Manager at One Day Tests and here are the lab's special requests for the Abdominal Pain Blood Test.
  1. SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE ABDOMINAL PAIN BLOOD TEST.

Take this test after any symptoms of a short-term illness have settled. If you take biotin supplements, stop taking these for 72 hours before the test.

You need to be eating a diet containing gluten for 6 weeks before this test.

There is a larger failure rate for some biomarkers in capillary testing (hemolysis etc). For platelets (PLT) measurement we recommend a walk-in venous sample.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Abdominal Pain Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

Why do I have to be on a gluten containing diet for this test?

Among the evaluations we conduct is a screening for coeliac disease, a gluten intolerance. This test detects your body's response to gluten, thus it is effective only if gluten has been part of your diet at the time of testing and for approximately six weeks prior. Should you be adhering to a gluten-free diet, while the other tests will remain precise, the coeliac disease screening could yield a false negative result.

How much gluten do I need to eat for this test?

You need to have the gluten equivalent of two slices of wheat-based bread per day.

What kind of liver diseases will this test detect?

This test will determine if there is an issue with the liver or the gallbladder but won’t tell us exactly what is causing the issue. This normally needs some further tests.
