About the Albumin blood test

What is albumin?

Albumin is a protein that is made in the liver. It is the most common protein in your blood. It transports calcium, potassium and other ions around the body, as well as hormones, vitamins and anything else in your blood, such as medicines. As albumin is produced in the liver, any liver damage will affect the levels of concentration of albumin, i.e. the levels will drop. Severe inflammations or shock may also reduce the levels of albumin production.

What does an albumin blood test show?

Reference ranges

If your indicative albumin level is lower than the reference range for our laboratory:

Generally, low albumin concentrations may point in the direction of a liver problem. Kidneys can also be the culprit in low levels of albumin, if, for example, they cannot prevent albumin from being removed as waste in urine. Decreased levels can also be caused by severe inflammation or shock.

Finally, low albumin concentrations (and generally low protein values) may imply cases where the body is not able to effectively absorb proteins.

If your indicative albumin level is higher than the reference range for our laboratory:

Usually, elevated albumin concentrations in the blood may point towards dehydration.

DOCTOR'S COMMENTS

Hi, I am Dr. Adam Staten and here's my view on this test as a GP and Clinical Director at One Day Tests.

Albumin is a protein that is produced by the liver. It is important for maintaining the osmotic pressure of the blood to stop fluid leaking out of the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues, causing swelling.

It also transports hormones, enzymes and nutrients around the body. Low levels of albumin can occur in malnourished states, but can also suggest a problem with the liver that is causing the liver to lose its capacity to produce the right amount of albumin.

Red flag symptoms for the Albumin Blood Test

Even if your blood tests are normal, see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms below.

Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for Albumin Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!
