About the test
The day 3 fertility blood test can actually be taken at any point between days 2 and 4 of your cycle (where day 1 is the first day of your period).
In this test we test for 3 key hormones: follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), and oestrogen (oestradiol). We test at this time in the cycle because this gives us a "baseline" reading of your hormone levels which gives us an indication of your ovarian reserve. At this time in the cycle both FSH and oestrogen should be low.
High levels of FSH in particular suggest there may be a problem with ovarian reserve. LH is also usually low at this point in the cycle, high or low levels may suggest irregular ovulation patterns.
There are a wide range of medical conditions and nutritional deficiencies that may reduce your chance of conceiving naturally, or may impact on the outcome of you pregnancy. Furthermore, pregnancy and childbirth put enormous stresses on the female body and so it is helpful to ensure that you are in optimum health not just to conceive, but so that you and your baby remain healthy through the pregnancy.
