Venepuncture appointment - how to prepare

If you are coming into one of our clinics for the test, this is what you need to do before you arrive:

  • Drink plenty of water about an hour before the appointment.
  • Avoid coffee/tea/energy drinks. Water is good!
  • That’s it! We’ll do the rest.

Home test kit for IVF and STI Viral Screen Blood Test - how it works

Our blood test kits are simple and convenient.

The most important step in doing a blood test at home is to read the instructions very carefully. The process is very simple, but there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of - you will save yourself a lot of time if you do it right the first time around!

  • Full printed instructions will arrive with your kit - please read them carefully.
  • Drink plenty before taking the sample and warm your hands up in the sink with warm water for a few minutes. This will make your blood flow much better.
  • Fill the tubes to the top line. We don’t need much blood; filling tubes to the top line is about 15 drops of blood.
  • Post the samples on the same day you take them, before midday, Monday to Thursday. If you post it any other time it might get to us late or be stuck at a sorting office over the weekend. You will then have to do it again.
  • Package the sample in the same box the kit came in. Otherwise, Royal Mail or DPD will reject it. The sample tubes go into a pouch, then into a cardboard box, and then into a return envelope. All of this is provided in the kit: please use it.

We look forward to receiving your sample in our lab!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hi, I am Lana Nela, Lead Nurse, and here is what we are frequently asked about this test.

How are these tests conducted, and what do they involve?

These tests require you to come to one of our clinics for sample collection by one of our nurses. The tests look for specific markers—such as antibodies and antigens—associated with HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Each result will either confirm you do not have the infection or provide further information regarding whether you have had it in the past, are currently infectious, or have developed protective antibodies.

Will a positive result automatically prevent me from undergoing IVF?

A positive result does not necessarily mean you cannot proceed with IVF. Instead, it provides valuable insight into the best approach for your care. Your fertility clinic will discuss your individual circumstances in detail. For instance, if you test positive for Hepatitis B or HIV, you may need specific antiviral treatments or a modified IVF protocol to minimise risk. The ultimate goal remains the same: to help you achieve a safe and healthy pregnancy. In some instances, treatment might be necessary before proceeding, while in others, simply being aware of your status and taking precautionary measures may be sufficient.

When will I get my results, and how do I interpret them?

Our report will clearly indicate whether any of the tests are reactive (positive), non-reactive (negative), or equivocal. You can then take this report to your fertility clinic. Your fertility clinic, most likely, will schedule a consultation to review these results with you. If there are any positive or borderline findings, you will be guided through additional confirmatory tests or referred to a specialist consultant if needed.

WHY TAKE THE TEST?

Hi, I am Nader Eldarf, I am a Biomedical Scientist in our laboratory and here is why it's important to take this test.
  1. WHY TAKE THE IVF AND STI VIRAL SCREEN BLOOD TEST?

Your health is paramount, and discovering any underlying infection at an early stage can make a real difference. An undetected infection can compromise your immune system, disrupt hormonal balances, or lead to complications during pregnancy. By catching problems in advance, you have the option to receive targeted treatments or to delay IVF until your body is in its optimal state.

The goal of IVF is a successful pregnancy that leads to the birth of a healthy baby. Infections such as HIV, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis may lower implantation rates or contribute to miscarriage. Identifying these factors before you begin ensures that any necessary treatments or precautions are put in place, increasing the likelihood of a smoother, more successful cycle.

IS THIS TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Hi, I am Sandeep Patel, I am the Laboratory Director at One Day Tests. Here are the symptoms that you may wish to address with this test.
  1. IS THE IVF AND STI VIRAL SCREEN BLOOD TEST RIGHT FOR YOU?

Many women preparing for IVF might wonder whether these tests are truly necessary. After all, you may feel healthy, have had no obvious symptoms, and perhaps even undergone basic blood work in the past. However, this particular set of tests is designed to address the specific needs and concerns associated with IVF treatment and your provider will insist on you having them performed before starting treatment, and for good reason.

Women Considering IVF for the First Time: If you are about to begin your very first IVF cycle, it is essential to have a complete health evaluation to maximise your chance of success. Conditions such as HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis, if undiagnosed, can interfere with fertilisation, implantation, and foetal development.

Women With Recurrent Fertility Treatments: If you’ve previously undergone fertility interventions—whether that’s clomiphene stimulation, intrauterine insemination, or other IVF attempts—ensuring you are free from infectious concerns can save you time, resources, and potential heartbreak in future cycles.

Ensuring Safety for Your Future Child: Infections like HIV and Hepatitis B can be passed from mother to child during pregnancy or birth. Early detection and appropriate medical management can reduce transmission risks dramatically. Therefore, opting for this package is a protective measure not only for you but also for your future baby.
